HOUSTON (AP) - An infant who prosecutors say was sexually assaulted is expected to be released from a hospital in the next few days and make a full recovery, officials said.

The 7-month-old has been removed from a respirator and is eating on her own, County Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin said Wednesday.

The baby suffered damage to every vital organ and her tongue had been nearly severed when she was admitted to the hospital Feb. 2, police said. Prosecutors say she was sexually assaulted.

``We've never seen those types of injuries in a baby that was alive,'' Olguin said.

I am an advocate of mandatory tatoos to identify
pedophiles.
I do not under any circumstance advocate the death
penalty, however I do advocate clear and identifiable
marking of offenders. The person who violated my child had
a prior record and yet was employed as a landscaper
at her pre school.
If he'd been clearly identified as a pedophile with a tatoo

It doesn't make one fucking bit of difference what the purported crime is when the person who's convicted is, in fact, innocent! Indeed, the more heinous the alleged crime, the less likely that the person will receive the kind of defense and investigation that assures a finding of 'guilty' is valid. The 'logic' that the ills of capital punishment can be ameliorated by reserving it for the more heinous crimes totally and completely ignores the wrongful convictions that pervade the system.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A father fatally stabbed his two young children, wounded three other children and then killed himself by slitting his throat after a domestic dispute Wednesday in a lower-income neighborhood of south Columbus, police said.

Clarence Lacey Moore used a hunting knife to kill 1-year-old Clarence Smith Moore, who died on the floor beside his bed from a laceration to the throat, Muscogee County Coroner James Dunnavant told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. Stephan Smith Moore, 2, died in the emergency room at The Medical Center about two hours later from stab wounds to his head, neck and back, Dunnavant said.

Moore, 24, died in surgery shortly afterward.

The other three children underwent surgery at The Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Marion Scott. The two boys - 3-year-old Shawn Smith and 5-year-old Shelton Smith - remained in critical condition Thursday, she said. Their older sister, Shelby Smith, 7, had her condition improve Thursday to stable and satisfactory.

If we effectively funded social workers in this country,
the perp in this case might have been identified and the child
protected BEFORE this atrocity was inflicted.

32. Some interesting facts in the story -

The young parents have been charged in the crime (not convicted - charged). Father is 22, mother 19, and the infant has a 16 month old sister. By my calculation, the mother was probably 15 when she got pregnant for the first time (not counting any unknown miscarriages or children possibly put up for adoption) and probably got knocked up for the second time the day she came home from the hospital with the first baby. So now the young and undoubtedly uneducated parents are home with two screaming babies and probably financial overload.

And I'm not a gambler, but I would bet a hundred bucks to a doughnut that "mom" was a regular victim of domestic violence herself, and that one or the other or both of the parents may well have been victims themselves of child abuse (where most often people originally learn these behaviors).

Excuses? No. Just an attempt to understand how to prevent this ever happening to another child.
