Attorney General Ashcroft to speak on Patriot Act at War Memorial Monday

U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft will speak in Milwaukee Monday about the USA Patriot Act and other crime initiatives, U.S. Attorney Francie Wendleborn said Sunday.

The speech, which will be delivered to southeastern Wisconsin law enforcement personnel, will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the War Memorial Center, 750 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. It is part of a 16-city tour that began in August to defend the Patriot Act as a necessary tool to fight terrorism.

The Patriot Act expanded government surveillance capabilities, toughened criminal penalties for terrorists and removed a barrier that for years prevented intelligence agencies and criminal investigators and prosecutors from sharing information.

Critics of the law, including U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.), argue that it has opened the door to greater government snooping, weakened constitutional protections against searches and seizures, and subjected to FBI scrutiny more records and documents, such as those held by libraries and businesses.

I hadn't ever posted there before so I sent it in great haste, unformatted.



Regarding signage: I think that the clarity of our message is lost when we use old-fashioned lefty lingo.

That sort of thing won't spread our information beyond the choir.

It also gives the media fodder to show us aasthe same old "kooky" protestors.


To win more Joes and Janes over, to show the media and the world that ordinary people are against this stuff thus making it ok to speak up themselves, well we need to not be scary.

That said, I was making a sign that reads
" Patriots against the patriot act"

Cool that this is popping up elsewhere. Makes me think this message has zing if we are all coming up with it.
