U.S. May Give EU Till June to Coax Iran on Nukes
In its drive to stop Iran gaining any ability to make nuclear weapons, the United States is ready to give European allies only until June to cajole Tehran before Washington seeks U.N. sanctions, U.S. diplomatic documents show.

Washington will not push the International Atomic Energy Agency board to refer Iran's case to the Security Council when it meets next week and no resolutions condemning the Islamic republic are expected to be adopted then, diplomats on the 35-nation board told Reuters.

But the next quarterly meeting in June will be different.

4. Scott Ritter.
My poor brother who just got activated hasn't a clue what he's in for,...and neither does the rest of my family. I've told them repeatedly about this administration's plans to control the M.E. but they just deny, deny, deny.

Why does anyone doubt whether this neoCON administration is going ALL THE WAY on their PNAC agenda? Too few forces? So what? Anyone believe that these folks won't take the power they have wielded unto themselves and USE IT to increase the military head count?

What is stopping the neoCONspirators from fully implementing their plans? What?

2. World to Bush...
"Go to hell you idiot cowboy."

Bush is bluffing. We don't have the manpower to invade Iran, and Iran isn't an Iraq. There will be even stiffer resistance with many more deaths. Also, the Bushies know that Europe will not help this time so we are on our own. The repercussions could be immense if we invade Iran. Other world countries could start dumping the dollar at a greater rate which would send our economy into a recession spiral.

This administration is the worst thing to happen to international relations in many years.

And Americans continue to sit around wondering about Michael Jackson's trial.

7. What I fear is there will be a draft in the next few months. This
administration is hell bent on conquering the world. It is so out of control now I don't know if we can do anything about it. It is totally insane to think we can fight the war on "terrorism" alone. Of course we started it. The events of 9/11 were monstrous, but bin Laden is still out there. He doesn't need to do anything but sit back and watch us self-destruct.

13. Attack
Edited on Fri Feb-25-05 12:13 PM by mmonk
has always been in the plans. The bases in Iraq are forward bases. We're to spread democracy (global hegemony). There aren't enough troops to secure Iraq, but we're there. Besides, the Israelis can attack.

20. An attack and an invasion...
...are two different things. At this point, I would guess that the Pentagon is working up a plan for air strikes on the assumption that Iran's response will be similar to that of Iraq in 1981--diplomatic outrage--and that Iran will not contemplate either war or revenge for the destruction of their main reactor at Bushehr.

However, that depends upon popular reaction inside Iran. Despite the divisions inside Iran today, such an attack could spark a new wave of nationalism, rally even the young around the mullahs, and Iran could conceivably entertain a border war with US forces in Iraq, drawing troops away from defensive positions around Iraq. This, I think, is doubtful, though, because the US still has significant air superiority.

As with the Israeli attack on Iraq's reactor in 1981, the US will try to describe the Iranians' start-up of their reactor as an imminent danger to peace in the region. For that reason, there's a good chance that the US will look the other way while Israel bombs Bushehr, with perhaps the chance of US aircraft bombing other facilities concurrently or shortly afterwards. Iran probably would not chance a retaliatory attack on Israel, if only because they would have to fly over Syrian air space to do it--and their F-4s and F-15s probably don't have the range for that.

All that said, there are a dozen ways in which such an attack could create an escalation to war, and if the Iranians did something by way of retaliation to invite that escalation, Bush would undoubtedly be able to stir up public sentiment for an invasion, whether there is troop strength enough or not.

June, however, may be optimistic. Russia has announced it plans to go ahead with delivery of fuel rods to Iran, and will finalize the delivery schedule in meetings in Teheran the end of this month. If either the Israelis or the US bomb the reactor after start-up, they become the war criminals in the eyes of the world, not Iran.

23. Air strikes, then...god knows what-all hell would break loose
the U.S. cannot accurately, or even 'close to' locate the (quite possible)deep underground nuke positions, we don't have enough troops, Iran is good buddies with russia and china and Iran is definitely not Iraq. bush & company are insane and fully committed to getting their armageddon on.

3. Looks like Scott was right again....
They are planning to attack Iraq in June. This statement is a trial baloon to start getting us used to the idea.

What we will hear from BushCo Inc. in June:

"Europe had its chance to use diplomacy to stop the Iranians from developing WMDs, and failed. Its now up to the US to save the world from this gathering threat....blah blah blah"

24. Well, in order to have the manpower to support such a thing...
the draft has to be (quietly) reinstated by April 15.

That would put LIHOP2 around the first or second week of April.
