Bremer Opposes Early Sovereignty for Iraq (He Will Use Veto Vs Council)
September 22, 2003, 7:31 AM EDT

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The top American official in Iraq would block any move for sovereignty by the Governing Council before the country has approved a new constitution and held free elections, according to a key official in the U.S.-led coalition.

The official said L. Paul Bremer would use his veto against such a maneuver as well as against a call by a bloc of council members who want to set up a militia to replace U.S. troops as Iraq's primary security force.

"Ambassador Bremer will definitely say no to both proposals if they're adopted by the council," said the official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. "He'll not budge on issues impacting on the long-term, political future of Iraq."

2. Hmm.
"The top American official in Iraq would block any move for sovereignty by the Governing Council before the country has approved a new constitution and held free elections, according to a key official in the U.S.-led coalition"

Does somebody have a link to the article where Iraqi elections were being stopped? I remember this happening, but I didn't save the link. Towns were electing new officials, and we stopped them from doing it. Does anybody have this link?

4. The sovereign Iraqi people oppose Bremer's rule over them

Power should be handed over at the earliest opportunity. Bremer's council of quislings is not a legitimate authority and should not be recognized by anyone.

6. More of our military will die, then.
Bremer does not value our soldiers' lives.

7. our troops are there to keep an election from happening
This is what this means. If they were confident that we were wanted there at all they wouldn't have a problem with it.
