Poll: Voters want Harris to vie for Nelson's seat

Respondents also prefer Betty Castor as Democrats' pick for next governor

STEPHEN MAJORS

Herald Staff Writer

TALLAHASSEE - A poll released Friday shows that voters prefer U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris over other Republicans to challenge U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson for his seat in 2006.
(snip)

"To Nelson's favor, his unfavorable numbers are very low," Richards said. "I would say he's not in bad shape. The lack of any strong negative certainly helps him."

The poll showed that 52 percent of Republicans and 49 percent of Democrats approved of Nelson's job as senator.

"Bill Nelson is clearly the most popular public official," said Nelson spokesperson Dan McLaughlin. "Secondarily, he appeals to as many Republicans as Democrats. I don't see anything here that would cause a public servant to be alarmed."

Democrats surely need that Senate seat, especially after Senator Bob Graham left office and Bush's Cuban "exile" friend, Mel Martinez (REPUBLICAN) was heavily financed to step in and grab his spot. Shouldn't lose them both.

Senator Bill Nelson

2. Bill Nelson drives me crazy
He supports all of Bush's nominations for everything, but here in Florida, it's a big win to have someone with a 'D' behind their name in the Senate just to give us one more number when we determine who will run the committees in '06. It's good to have someone who will vote with the democrats some of the time.

I know that with this logic, it was good to have Zell in Georgia too, but given the choice of a wingnut with a 'D' vs. a wingnut with an 'R', I'll take the 'D', even though we can't accept his challenge to a duel anymore.

will learn, hopefully not too late, that you cannot play ball with these pirates. For starters, look for some sort of anti-gay amendment on the ballot in 2006.

12. he did help fillibuster the judges last term (except for one)
he voted against cloture on Owens and at least one other judge, so he doesn't support all of bush's nominees.

9. Misleading headline.....26 percent of voters, and 37 percent of Republican
want her to run - yes that's more than any of the other names mentioned - but it still is hardly anything to cheer about - particularly since 52% of REPUBLICANS think Nelson is doing a good job.

10. I hope she doesn't run. I don't live in Fl, but I can't stand her on TV!
If she was a damn candidate for the Senate, I'd have to keep the TV on mute way too often!

I can't decide which one I can't stand to see more, her or Shrub!

13. Nelson should hope that Harris runs.
He'd get lots and lots of contributions, as everyone across the US would want revenge for what Katherine did in 2000. If she runs, then the public will re-visit the horror of election 2000, and help Al Gore win the nomination again!!
