Dean Roars Into Town - (Give Em Hell Howard!)
http://www.ljworld.com/section/citynews/story/197427

This is great: "...concluding his backyard speech with a litany of Democratic values, Dean added: "This is a struggle of good and evil. And we're the good."

GO HOWARD GO!

Democrats welcome new DNC leader

By Joel Mathis, Journal-World

Saturday, February 26, 2005

There were plenty of screams Friday afternoon at Liberty Hall, but none of them came from Howard Dean.

Instead, the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee was cheered enthusiastically by a sign-waving crowd gathered to hear Dean's message that the party must build its strength in traditionally Republican states such as Kansas.

"We need to go everywhere," he told the rally. "There is not one county in this state, I don't care how far west you go, that doesn't have Democrats. We have to be proud of who we are."

It was a message gladly received among the Democratic faithful.

"It was wonderful, very energizing, a very positive, powerful message," said Micheline Burger, who joined nearly 1,000 others in paying $5 to hear Dean, the former presidential candidate. "It gives me a hope there's a good future ahead of us, as opposed to what we've been having the last four years."

Mark Simpson, executive director of the Kansas Democratic Party, was unavailable to say how much the party raised Friday. But Dean's rally, along with a $100-a-head fund-raiser at the home of Lawrence residents John and Nancy Hiebert, provided the state party with a fresh infusion of cash.

Just as important, other officials said, they got some inspiration.

"Just enthusiasm," said Kathy Greenlee, chair of Douglas County Democrats. "Not only for Democrats in Douglas County, but Democrats across Kansas."

Red meat

More than 100 people attended the Hiebert fund-raiser, where the house was festooned with a dozen "Dean for America" signs in the front yard.

Media weren't allowed into the event. But Dean spoke in the Hieberts' backyard, over a public address system, making it relatively easy to hear and see -- there were wide slits in the fence -- from a side street. At one point a group of four people quietly huddled at the fence to listen.

His speech was similar in both Liberty Hall and the Hiebert back yard. Democrats, he said, must reframe the values debate, claiming the high ground on Social Security, health care and protecting American security.

"Those are Kansas values," he said.

But the Hiebert crowd got a little more red meat than the Liberty Hall attendees.

On abortion specifically, he said, the party must commit to making abortions "safe, legal and rare" while maintaining women's rights to choose.

"The issue is not abortion," Dean told the closed-door fund-raiser. "The issue is whether women can make up their own mind instead of some right-wing pastor, some right-wing politician telling them what to do."

And Dean told the Hiebert fund-raiser that gay marriage was a Republican diversion from discussions of ballooning deficits and lost American jobs. That presents an opportunity to attract moderate Republicans, he said.

"Moderate Republicans can't stand these people (conservatives), because they're intolerant. They don't think tolerance is a virtue," Dean said, adding: "I'm not going to have these right-wingers throw away our right to be tolerant."

And concluding his backyard speech with a litany of Democratic values, he added: "This is a struggle of good and evil. And we're the good."

When told of Dean's remarks, Derrick Sontag -- executive director of the Kansas Republican Party -- said he was "shocked."

"My immediate reaction to that whole dialogue is, it's full of hatred," Sontag said. "The Democratic Party has elected a leader that's full of hatred."

‘Energy and focus'

Back at Liberty Hall, the ruling party's supporters weren't entirely absent from the area. Lawrence entrepreneur Eric Haar held a one-man demonstration in front of the Eldridge Hotel, 701 Mass. With a Bush-Cheney sign in his hand, he sat silently as the crowd of Lawrence liberals shuffled toward the event.

"I just want to show people driving by that not everybody is gung-ho and crazy about this Howard Dean thing," Haar said. "I have been flipped off four times."

Inside the hall, some people who saw Dean's speech thought the former candidate for the presidency had watered down his rhetoric.

"I feel like he could have gone even stronger with his language," said Katherine Dessert, a student and preschool teacher. "I feel like he was a little bit too conservative. It didn't move me."

Dean was joined on the Liberty Hall stage by a slew of state and local Democratic officials, but not two of the highest Democrats in the state: Rep. Dennis Moore and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.

Sebelius said she had breakfast with Dean and was impressed with his enthusiasm.

"I think he will be a good chairman for the party. I think he has energy and focus," she said.

And Larry Gates, chairman of the Kansas Democratic Party, said officials would take Dean's message to heart.

"We have to compete at every level," Gates said. "That's what we're doing tonight: showing up."

-- Staff writers Scott Rothschild and Jay Senter contributed to this report.

Any Dem that can't see that Dean is a POSITIVE FORCE for a flagging party is crazy, a wimp, or a closet Repuke.

5. That's Funny, Coming From a Republican
If tolerance and the enforcement of same is seen by the GOP as "Hatred", then so be it. I (and most religious) would see it as Love. Love them to death, Howard! Even if they hate it!

7. Props to Dean!
"There were plenty of screams Friday afternoon at Liberty Hall, but none of them came from Howard Dean."

Dean has lived through the media manipulation of his "scream" and is hot on the trail to Democracy throught out our beloved land!

The article says the republican stooge(well, not exactly) is shocked!..Shocked! I tell you.. by Dean's remarks..the "executive director".. even has the temerity to say the dialogue is full of hatred and we elected a leader full of hatred"..

There they go again..trying to frame the debate.

Since when is calling a spade a spade "full of hatred".

I'm sure this creep knows all about hatred if he listens to the oxyrush limpbaugh show.

10. Dean "Gave Em Hell" On What?
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 07:42 PM by Itsthetruth
And Howard Dean "gave em hell" on what? Did Dean say anything with substance on the Iraq war, the attack on civil liberties, Bush's appointments, the lawsuit legislation passed or any other significant issues?

Anyone can deliver militant sounding rhetoric without really saying anything.

Where's the beef???

12. The DNC told him not to set policy. Talk to them. Here is a video.
http://www.6newslawrence.com/stories/2005/feb/25/dean/

Also he does speak his mind just like he did before. But he can't set policy. He has been warned not to do so. Talk to the congressional committees, they are meeting with him this week-end sometime I think.

He is just the chairman. Whaddya want from a chairman?

Please note his comments on the war in the video. Quicktime, easy download on high speed. Very good.

32. Wrong War At The Wrong Time?
I just looked at the video. Dean said: "We got in the wrong war at the wrong time". Well, what would be the right war at the right time? Dean suggests the North Korea and/or Iran!!!!!

Of course, Howard did not even suggest withdrawl from Iraq. That's not the position of the Democratic Party.

Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 08:04 PM by Eloriel
Hip, hip, hooray. A certain DUer must've been getting a little lonely.

If you weren't there, you really aren't in a position to judge his talks. An article with a few quotes isn't a transcript. That said, I think reframing things is one of THE most substantive things he can do and he's spending enormous time and energy doing it.

Further, you may remember that Pelosi and Reid got their knickers in a twist and effectively muzzled Dean from being involved in policy issues. Perhaps you've seen the reports where he has demurred on discussions of Iraq, for precisely that reason ("no policy discussions, please").

Edited to add: Clever of you to criticize him for what he's been expressly forbidden from doing.

31. Howard Dean Is In A Straightjacket?
They have a straightjacket on him and the Democratic Party establishment has muzzled him? Great. But, he will be allowed to raise corporate money for the party.

I know about Pelosi and Reid. They made it clear to Howard Dean that he will not set party policy on anything. They and other Congressional leaders of the party will do that. Dean will probably play ball with them. I hope he doesn't.

but Dean is not on the trail to talk about policy..he's there to fire up the troops and raise money.

Dean is fierce & feisty and he's trying to do the job of a DNC Chair..not running for Governor or Prez.

29. I was there. Here is what I heard him say:
1. SS is solvent. No reason to mess with it.
2. Rural America is important. We must protect farmers.
3. We are fighting the wrong war at the wrong time.
4. Our prez is not supporting the troops when he cuts veterans benefits.
5. Comprehensive renewable energy is part of our national defense. We must explore energy alternatives.
6. 43% of money loaned to US comes from foreign sources. This needs to stop.
7. Republicans can't handle money. They borrow and spend.
8. We need to tell the federal govt to let us control our schools at the local level instead of imposing unfunded mandates.
9. Even Republicans can't stand the Republicans in power.
10. To take back America, we need to:
Show up.
Be proud to be Democrats.
Stand up for what we believe in.
Don't run the party by pollsters and focus groups.

We will win because Americans want to be told the truth.

19. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around
what a puke considers "full of hatred". Maybe I can call a couple of my gay friends, who are close to celebrating their union of almost 20 years, to see if they can help me. Or a couple I know who is having to declare bankruptcy because of medical bills (they both work, and have medical insurance, by the way).

Maybe many of my friends who have been the victims of what the party of greed can help me understand what about the truth the good Doctor spoke was hateful. Oh, wait, I just realized who can help me decide about hatred...the "Rev" Fred Phelps, what's who! The man is constantly using his status as a man of god to explain hatred to us. Surely, he'll have an answer to my question.

28. Lieberman is an idiot. How well did he fair in the primaries?
The only votes he got were, more than likely, swing party voters that were war hawks that disliked Bush. Lieberman was just less of an idiot. 3% shouldn't have an effect.

Besides, Joe is too busy pulling the chains for his favorite lobbyists in the pharm, insurance, and military contracting. No time and no crediblity for Dean bashing.

Rock on Doc!

40. Not trying to be a downer, just an honest question -
Is anyone else tired of being told how important grassroots activism is, but instead of giving us direction as to who's door we should be knocking on, we just keep getting pleas for more money.

The DNC keeps telling us that word of mouth and our letter and opinions are what gets things done, so I wish they would inform us as to how the system works, and how specifically Joe Blow off the street can make a difference.

I have spent an inordinate amount of time learning information that could and should be drummed into our heads and used as a motivating tool by the DNC.

For instance, until I started researching, I had forgotten that the Chairman of a committee is the only one who has the authority to call hearings, and if you saw the Maher clip the other day Robin Williams looked very interested when Joe Biden said that.

I think a lot of people don't think the Dems in the Senate and House are doing anything, because they don't realize how constrained they are being in the minority.

BUT if we have enough people mobilized, together we have a real chance of influencing opinion and action. No amount of money is going to buy that, it has to come from us.

There are so many basic facts that most people don't know, for instance: 80% of our national revenues come from individual taxes and social security payroll tax 1.6 trillon of the 2.04 trillon in total revenues. Corporate taxes contribute only 230 billion, or 11% of our Revenues. BUT on our expenses Corporations receive almost double that figure or 450 billion in defense contracts alone! What's wrong with this picture?

I think we need to get down to basics and concentrate on how to get the electoral process in order before the next federal elections in 2006, if not then we may as well not contribute a dime more, it is immaterial!
