Mother of 14 month old child called back to serve in Iraq
A Granite Falls woman who was released from the Army Reserve after only a few months in uniform was shocked by a recent military mailgram telling her to report for duty next month for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"I thought I was discharged and done," said Andrea DeGeus.

It wasn't so simple.

DeGeus' name was transferred into the Individual Ready Reserve, an administrative roster the Army plucks soldiers from during times of war.

DeGeus, 21, is now struggling to get her Army orders changed. Her biggest worry is 14 months old.

2. She'll get a "non-combat" job
like driving a truck.

I wonder who so many of these people voted for. Was there ever an article published indicating how the military broke politically?

3. Me too.
Wonder who she voted for or if she voted at all.

I'll reserve my sympathies until I know.

11. The fact taht you never saw the breakdown is your clue of the
day....

Units did not go for chimpster as much as people thing (on the right) We even had one county reveal their numbers and it was something like 4:1 for Kerry. (New Jersey I think)

6. The article said her MOS was Civi Affairs
It's a non-combat job but as everyone knows that doesn't mean you won't get shot at.

Whether she has a combat role or not isn't the point. It's the fact that having such a young child should provide some exemption or delay in the IRR obligation.

It also illustrates the problem with the Rumsfeld doctorine of fighting a war on the cheap.

8. Exemptions?
Please. I know of situations where both parents were sent to different assignments, never to see each other for the entire year, with the kids left at the neighbor's for a year or more. The parents couldn't even get leave together.

There are so many Guard/Reserve/Active duty working out of their MOS isn't isn't funny. The result is lots of injuries, lots of deaths.

10. They'll simply have to scale down their standard of living
That "sacrifice" President Mightymouse spoke of. Since she's not a single mom, I don't think he has much of a case for an exemption. Another child left behind.

12. I agree, she doesn't have a case at all
If it were the husband being called up, this wouldn't even be a news story - there's a subtle sexist spin going on.

I've been in her shoes, and it wasn't pleasant getting called up when I thought I was out for good, especially when my kid was still nursing. But as a female vet, I strongly oppose asking for or expecting special treatment just because you are female.
