U.S. Military strengthens ties with African American colleges

The Defense Department has signed a commitment with Alabama State University and several other Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The little publicized ceremony took place during the week at the DoD and HBCU African- American History Month observance and symposium in Montgomery, Alabama.

The first signers were Charles S. Abell, principal deputy undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, and Joe Lee, president of Alabama State University. 'It pledges us to support the executive order that the president has established on support for Historically Black Colleges and Universities,' Abell said after the signing. 'It reflects the Department of Defense's commitment to work with the HBCUs to provide opportunities for the young folks and opportunities for sharing of research, sciences and technology work and the availability of DoD resources to assist HBCUs

5. I do not think so... Where I went to college...

the University had alot of research programs that were sponsored by the military. It is a monetary benefit for the University and is good experience for students. There were no unusual recruitment agreements and as a matter of fact I can never recall seeing a recruiter or anything of that sort on campus.

In the past these projects were mainly offered to large Universities only. Also, I doubt black colleges received any prior to the Civil Rights movement and obviously not that many after. It is about time the military started spreading them out.

6. Millitary recruiters and their brochures, etc. are all over the campus

where I work. It's partly the timing (they need warm bodies badly) and partly, probably, the fact that the students who attend this college are mid to lower class. Thus, more susceptible to bribes -- er -- signing bonuses.

7. Don't underestimate the role that the military has played ...

... in offering opportunities to African-Americans, who weren't always able to obtain the same opportunities in their hometowns. It is true that these opportunities have often come with an increased danger of death or injury in war. But the military was also desegregated before much of the rest of our society was.

8. Yeah, but anything the military has done to help minorities has been

the result of pragmatism.

... the military's motives are pure in some abstract sense.
