US senators opposed to amendment for possible Schwarzenegger presidential bid

www.chinaview.cn 2005-02-28 06:39:59

WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Two US senators said on Sunday that they were opposed to an amendment to the Constitution to allow California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to run for president in 2008.

"I probably wouldn't" support a constitutional amendment to allow foreign-born people who have been US citizens for 20 years to run for president, Senator Rick Santorum, a Republican from Pennsylvania, said in NBC News' "Meet the Press" program.

Santorum said there were many "pressing issues to change than allowing people who are born overseas" to run for president. "So Idon't see any reason," he said.

Senator Joe Biden, a Democratic from Delaware, also expressed reluctance to support a constitutional amendment. "I want to help Arnold any way I can, but I'm incredibly reluctant to amend the Constitution for any purpose," he said.

1. Well, if this is what Arnold heard in Washington the other week. . .
it goes a long way towards explaining his comments this morning in which he derided the effort to get an Amendment considered and said he'd never wanted to be President.

MTP ... figures ... if Tim Russert was conducting things ... what a simpleton ...

Biden: 'incredibly reluctant' ... how about 'adamantly opposed' to such tinkering with this founding principle ... the founders were well-schooled in history, and knew what they were doing with this ... that it's even being discussed is unconscionable in my book ...

I'm embarrassed for our country that this is even on China View News ...

5. What a farce! And little Ricky Santorum probably has his own plans

for the Oval Office, so why help potential competition?

The fact is, Ahnuld would never be electable as president even with election fraud, and he wouldn't be a total Bush/Saudi cartel toady anyway, so why would they spend so much political capital for him? Only his truly amazing hubris and the hypnotic charisma that apparently (I've never been able to comprehend it) grips his fans ever raised the possibility in the first place. Of course he's lying when he said he never wanted to run for president.

Good ole Ahnuld -- a walking capsule summary of what's wrong with the celebrity/faux-macho factor playing such a role in American politics.

9. If you think Arnold would
never be electable, then you don't understand the depth of the stupidity of the American people.

12. Hmmmm. Maybe you're right. They DID elect Reagan, after all.
Best that we don't put them to the test. Thank goodness he can't run without that amendment.

7. well, you know, they can always circumvent the constitution the way they
did to force us to display a "federally-approved" id in order to travel, or the way they have to imprison people indefinitely without charging them. they'll just write a new secret regulation into place and *POOF!*, ahh-nuld will be Brezidend!

10. It's not so much he was born in another country ...
It's that he still is a citizen of another country. It means we would have a president that is a citizen of Austria... if he were to be elected president.

13. There are more pressing issues like banning gay marriage
that we need to waste energy and money on.
