LONDON, England (CNN) -- Prince Harry has passed initial tests to join the British Army as an officer but is likely to take at least a year out before beginning his service.

Harry, 19, who is third in line to the British throne, passed the Army's Pre-Regular Commissions Board assessment with flying colors, royal officials said.

That means he has cleared the first hurdle towards enrolling at the elite Sandhurst Military Academy which boasts other royal ex-pupils including Jordan's King Abdullah.

As the 19-year-old British prince headed for Australia, royal officials hinted at a double gap year, saying he may decide not to start at the top military college southwest of London until September 2005.

"Prince Harry has successfully passed his pre-RCB with a Category 1 pass and is hoping to start training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, in the next two years," officials at the royal residence Clarence House told CNN

I do not understand the need to always denigrate the Royal Family. They do a whole lot more good that the politicians in this country; Charles does a lot of important work for the environment. Anne is world recognized for her charity work. It is a duty that they take seriously. When England went to war against the Falkans, Edward went with them. Meanwhile we have George Sr. sopping up the money at Carlyle, Cheney at Halliburton, George Jr. with anyone who will have him. Except for Jimmy and maybe in the future Bill, not much there on our side of the ocean. I can just see our illustrious Resident doing anything that takes more spunk than clearing brush. He can't even ride a horse; what a sham.

Charles and Anne do indeed do a lot of good work. However....

The UK / Britain (not just England) fought against ARGENTINA who had invaded the FALKLAND Islands which belong to Britain for some strange reason. I don't actually think that war was ever declared though.

And it was ANDREW, not Edward who is a long-standing member of the Royal Navy and who went to the Falklands (or Malvinas, as the Argentines like to call them).

I agree that one shouldn't just criticise the Royal Family without thinking about it first.....except for Prince Philip, who is a racist old arsehole.

Oh, and use of the word "spunk" is to be discouraged when talking about anything English, as it means something different over here...

... I read recently on the net that Harry may NOT be Charles' son, but that other idiot she saw for awhile. I wonder when someone will snatch a piece of his hair and DNA it. lol.

It is a matter of official record that when Lady Di left school her only educational qualifications were a certificate for keeping her hamster's cage clean.

No GCSEs, no A Levels, no formal examinations of any kind whatsoever.
