Women Adopt Frozen Embryos, Save Them from Science
Women Adopt Frozen Embryos, Save Them from Science

MADRID (Reuters) - A Spanish clinic that allows women to adopt frozen embryos to save them from scientific research said Monday 14 women were pregnant with adopted embryos.

<snip>

Tens of thousands of embryos are currently frozen in Spain and the launch of the program coincided with the government allowing scientists to use them for research.

<snip>

The Institut Marques said couples who had lost a child, infertile couples, and single and homosexual women were among those who had decided to have an embryo implanted.

But there were also women who wanted to save the frozen embryo from being used in scientific research. Opponents of stem cell research including the Roman Catholic Church say it is unethical to destroy a human embryo.

4. How can you adopt someone that is not a human life yet?
That's like going to the grocery store and 'adopting' a 12 pack of eggs to save them from being eaten... perfectly ridiculous

5. Why aren't they adopting real children?
I mean, all this is great and all, way to save embryos from science, hooray, but aren't there, you know, actual kids in need of adoption who could be saved from (probably short) lives of abject poverty and deprivation?

I dunno, maybe it's just me...

11. Right to Lifers
Heard some woman from some "Christian" family group calling for a NATIONAL frozen embryo bank so these "babies" could be "adopted". All well and good, IF the couples want to do that, but what if they don't? Not just the already here child adoption argument, but that is why they even have IVF clinics in the first place; so people can have their OWN kids. Duh? Last I read, there are approximately 400,000 frozen embryos in the USA. Think even HALF of the couples would agree to somebody else having their child? I would argue that I went through all of this time, pain, and money to create these embryos, you want a kid, YOU DO IT yourself.

if they started handing out embryos that were made with my sperm. Shouldn't what happens to the embryos be up to the "parents?"

13. And not even all of those embryos are usable
Think of all the embryos they produce for one women, and how few are actually used. This is in part a safety measure so you don't come up short on embryos, but it is also because they screen them to test for potential genetic defects. Only those that are free from genetic damage are implanted; the rest are either thrown or frozen.

How many women are going to agree to be implanted with embryos knowing full well that there is a signficant chance the baby will be born with, say, Down's syndrome?

31. That's the truth.
How many ads do you have in your paper that run like:
"Loving, white Hetero RICH, SUCCESSFUL professional couple, he 42, MBA, she, 25, BA, former Miss Indiana runner-up, with beautiful mortgaged-to-the-hilt McMansion in University Farms want to adopt your WHITE, non-crimminal-fathered baby to carry around in our Escalade.(Ad Nauseum)..."

Gawd forbid that those older children may have been exposed to non-ReTHUGlican ideas, or may need a little extra loving, or are old enough to KNOW that they're being chosen as a fashion accessory....

6. Here's a minimun test they should have to pass
before "adopting" an embryo. I bet most of them would fail.

7. I suppose these women wanted to be pregnant anyway.
And required in-vitro fertilization of an already fertilized egg. You would have to be fairly crazy to do this otherwise.

It would be ironic if lesbian couples "saved these eggs from science" for the sake of the church's teachings.

9. Real problem is the narrow, cult specific equating of stem cell
research to abortion.

A theological slippery slope.

Maimonides (my favorite theologian and philosopher) disagrees with this narrow, cult specific interpretation of Scripture.

15. So basically a woman that had an embryo created so she might have a child.
has now lost the rights to those embryos. So without their PERMISSION other women will be raising their children? Um YUCK.

Only tens of thousands minus 14 to go. Doesn't sound too promising for the Roman Catholic church.

The RCC is against in vitro fertilization. So I doubt they would promote this scheme..

18. So when are all fertile women
Edited on Tue Mar-01-05 07:59 PM by geniph
going to be required to put all their eggs in safekeeping every month? I mean, you know, otherwise, some of those eggs might get fertilized and fail to implant, and we can't be having that! Mother Nature has to stop this rampant shedding of fertilized ova, as they will soon be legally equivalent to tax-paying citizens.

I'm just waiting for the Menses Examination Patrols to start.

by the way, last time I checked, the Catholic Church had an official position of opposition to IVF, too.

They aren't frozen and actually interact with you.

Funniest thing I've read all day.

All life MUST exist at any cost because..it must I guess. And then it's Johnny frozen appleseed goes marching off to war. It's not the life that matters it's the mustness of it having life.

27. Good Grief... These people are NUTS!!!
There are REAL-LIVE children who are looking for parents.. But then real live children need food, clothing, shelter, educating....How "conservative" of these folks to adopt a chunk of frozen goo...Do they get a "pre-birth certificate" too"?? Maybe with 2 little wet spots where the "widdle footies" would be :eyes:

I get asked I don't know how many times why don't pro lifers adopt all these children if they are pro life. Here some step up to the plate and instead of being congradulated for actually living up to their ideals they are nuts or worse. They honestly can't win here no matter what.

32. Sheesh...
I knew there had to be one here.

"Snowflakes Frozen Embryo Adoption Program

Embryos preserved in frozen storage offer great hope for life and for families facing fertility challenges. When a family has been successful in having a child through in vitro fertilization, embryos are often cryo-preserved, resulting in the question of what to do with them. These frozen embryos can be the hope of a child for an infertile couple. Embryo adoption shares this wonderful hope with others.

In 1997, Nightlight began the Snowflakes Frozen Embryo Adoption Program, which is helping some of the more than 400,000 frozen embryos realize their ultimate purpose – life – while sharing the hope of a child with an infertile couple. In addition to your physician, you need to trust the people you choose to help you in these important decisions"

Do the women who produced these embryos know that they are doing this?

33. What people don't realize...
is these frozen embryos are going to be real, live, breathing ADULTS one day, with questions about their origins, ethnicity, and MEDICAL HISTORY. Try being an adoptee and going to the doctor, when you know NOTHING of your birth family's medical history. This is the number one reason adoption activists are pushing for adult adoptees to be able to obtain their original birth certificate. There are countless stories of adoptees dying for lack of medical information.

This is the most assinine program I've ever heard of.
