I was not at work on 9/11. I was off, and woke up to the second plane crashing right as we flipped on the tv. Didn't go to work for a couple of days.

I work at DirecTV, so we don't actually handle the EAS anyway - that's the job of the individual channels we carry.

I've definitely caused a ruckus though, up to being labelled a "Saddam sympathizer" and being told I had the same mindset as Osama bin Laden. Thankfully, those same people (with one or two exceptions) now realize I was right to speak up.

It's really hard to go to work, knowing that my job is to keep propaganda on the air. Yet I have a 4-year-old son, so what can I do? I just do what I can, and speak out. I think my bumper stickers and t-shirts might get me in trouble with our proposed new owner, though. Sigh.

Canada looks nice...but I'll probably die here in the US. As long as I go down fighting, it's all good.

EAS couldn't have told anyone anything they couldn't be told either by the on-air announcer or hear in a live-carried Guiliani press conference.

EAS is on its way to being seriously abused. We're going to have the government take over the airwaves for Amber Alert? Yes, let's get everyone used to having Washington DC take over our local radio stations for just about any purpose.


Do you know what it's for?

The EBS was originally designed to distribute information in case of a nuclear attack. The tone and/or teletype (back when broadcast outlets got their news from the AP/UPI wires) would go off and you'd listen to it. If it didn't say "this is a test" it would be accompanied by FAA-type code words you had to look up in an annually-renewed brochure to check their legitimacy before going on air. The announcer would then go on air accompanied by the 'listen up y'all' tones.

EAS differs in that it allows the Government to take direct control of a broadcast outlet by cutting into the on-air stream. It was a very nice little deal, affording DC to take control, and Clear Channel and others to fire on-air personell and go to voice-tracking.

Ask yourself this: would New Yorkers have been more likely to go into a panic upon hearing a computer-generated announcement or some other strange voice telling people to get out of the Southern tip of Manhattan than they would getting the same message from the regular radio host?

My belief is yes.

I think some people are getting this confused with the question of how the FAA and Air Force seemed not to react according to standard operating procedures for hijackings. FCC=Federal Communications Commission. EAS=Emergency Alert System. Used to be Emergency Broadcast System ("This station will now conduct a test of the Emergency Broadcast System.... had this been a real emergency etc.)

I don't think this has anything to do with that, unless you wanted to see it as some part of a "stand down" posture as part of LIHOP. But it's only suggestive (maybe not even that), not probative.
