WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Today the Global AIDS Alliance
accused President Bush of misleading Americans and the world by falsely claiming an emergency response to AIDS was underway.
The President stated, "The U.S. has begun to carry out the Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief." In fact, not one dime has been spent to implement the Emergency Plan announced eight months ago, even though the epidemic is spreading exponentially to areas critical to U.S. national security.
"The President is obviously getting bad advice about how to tackle a real health emergency like AIDS," noted Dr. Paul Zeitz, Executive Director of the Global AIDS Alliance. "Most experts would advise against postponing the bulk of the spending to the later years of the program."
The President has also made false claims about the readiness of countries to utilize the additional funding. The Bush position amounts to saying, absurdly, "Sorry we cannot give you the funding you can use to improve healthcare infrastructure because you lack the health care infrastructure."
