Key California Republican Backs Schwarzenegger
Key California Republican Backs Schwarzenegger
Tue September 23, 2003 02:16 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A top California Republican endorsed Arnold Schwarzenegger for governor on Tuesday, stepping up pressure on the party's only other major candidate to drop out of the race.

State Senate Republican leader Jim Brulte said he had concluded that his Senate colleague Tom McClintock could not win in a crowded field of replacement candidates hoping to take office should a recall against Gov. Gray Davis on October 7 succeed.

Republicans are increasingly concerned that their many months of efforts to unseat Davis could end up electing Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, who many see as more liberal and less experienced than Davis.

"Arnold Schwarzenegger is the only Republican who can beat Cruz Bustamante," Brulte, who has worked closely with McClintock on past campaigns, told a telephone conference call. "Arnold Schwarzenegger will be a check we desperately need in California government."

Brulte is our resident bully for the lemmings though..I'll bet McClintock DOES step in line which will only make some of HIS fans vote NO on the recall.

3. Not at all surprising.
Of course the establishment supports him. They, however, may live to regret that decision. We shall see...

5. Are they (pukes) trying to get rid of McClintock?
First Issa says 'no' to recall if two pukes are on the ballot; now Brulte endorses Arnie. However, I don't think McClintock will back away so easily.
