Danish prince to wed commoner
COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- Crown Prince Frederik will formally announce his engagement to Australian commoner Mary Donaldson on October 8, a spokesman for the royal palace told The Associated Press Wednesday.

----

The media has really gotten into this - they had specials going all morning, despite it's only the date of the engagement that has been announced

Either way, here's to our fellow Australians, I know they all like a nice glass of beer  :toast: :9

1. Somewhere, Prince Charles is grinning ear-to-ear...
He figures if Frederik can do it, HE can surely be allowed to marry Camilla! :eyes:

B-)

2. However, unlike Charles
.. Frederik has never been married before. I do, however, remember reading that more people are approving of a marriage between Charles & Camilla, so it doesn't seem unlikely that they'll eventaully get married.

5. But Charles is a widower now...
...that is, if you're one of those fundies who think divorce doesn't really exist and you remain married in the eyes of $DEITY.

10. Camilla isn't a commoner! She was married. That's why he couldn't
marry her before.

11. Not only is Camilla a commoner
but so was Diana. 'Commoner' means 'not royal'. You are right that it's her status that is still the sticking point - since her ex-husband is still alive, some in the Church of England object on strict religious grounds; others don't like it because they had any affair while still married, and can't bear the thought or her being called 'queen'.

3. Good For Him!
Denmark is a beautiful country. I have enjoyed my visit there years ago, and my family has always kept in touch with our relatives there.

12. There's a painting of the royal family at the palace in Amsterdam
In the painting is an Asian woman who married into the family. I believe she is from Hong Kong.

But the royal family is big on marrying into other royal families. The Danish royal family has marital connections to Czar Nicholas II.

13. That would be..
.. Princess Alexandra (former Alexandra Christina Manley). She is married to Prince Joachim who is 1 year younger than Frederik.

I doubt that the royal family is keen on marrying into other royal families. True, it was expected up until the 1950's I think that the royals married other royals, but it's very laid off now. Even our current Queen is married to a French diplomat who has no connections to the French royal family, other than he being a Count.

Another interesting thing to note, is that the oldest of Joachim & Alexandra's childen is now starting in a public Kindergarten and that he'll be going to a public school when that time comes.
