Schroeder: Only U.N. Can Legitimize Iraq Future

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder appealed Wednesday for a decisive role for the United Nations in the reconstruction of Iraq but softened past differences with the United States.

Addressing the U.N. General Assembly a day after President Bush urged other nations to help pacify and rebuild Iraq, Schroeder said Germany was prepared to provide humanitarian, technical and economic aid and train the Iraqi security forces. Berlin has ruled out sending its own troops.

"Only the United Nations can guarantee the legitimacy that is needed to enable the Iraqi population to rapidly rebuild their country under an independent, representative government," he declared.

Bush Tuesday ruled out a swift transfer of sovereignty to an Iraqi authority, advocated notably by France, and limited the U.N. role to helping draft a constitution and supervise elections.

9. Saw an interview with Gerhard on Charlie Rose
He seems like an amazing, down-to-earth person. His views on world relations were outstanding. Nice to have people with sense to counter * et al.

5. Israel earned the hostility, fair and square. Are you sure you have
right forum, because the vast majority of DU'ers support the United Nations, particularly when it comes to Iraq, and I/P issues?

12. I do believe people.....
....are entitled to their opinions, not just the popular ones. I'm also a Democrat who is sceptical of the UN. Not opposed to the UN, but sceptical of it. They pick and choose their "fights" just like everyone else. Why else would they let a million die in Rwanda? It was a UN RESOLUTION that led to starvation in Iraq also.

Israel has earned its criticism. Look at the Israeli pilots who've recently signed a petition refusing to bomb any more innocent Palestinians' homes. Also, read "Drinking the Sea at Gaza" by Amira Hass, an award-winning Israeli Haaretz reporter. Your attitude may change.

11. Hey, that's what Clark explained well some time ago!
He said that it is so, because Itaq has a vote in the UN, but no control whatsoever on the decision making in the US.
Anyway, it seems the "friendship" with W is shaky again. UN - about to become irrelevant soon.
