LOS ANGELES - The candidates in the gubernatorial recall rushed back to the campaign trail Thursday, hours after wrapping up a debate that while spirited saw no clear-cut winner and broke little new ground on the issues.
Former Republican candidate Bill Simon has decided to endorse Arnold Schwarzenegger over state Sen. Tom McClintock, a source close to Simon said Thursday. He was to endorse Schwarzenegger at a town hall meeting in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, the source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press.
Simon, a conservative businessman who lost the governor's election to Davis last year, originally entered the race to replace him but dropped out last month when polls showed him trailing Schwarzenegger and others.
McClintock took to the airwaves Thursday morning, telling Fox News and MSNBC that he is in the race to stay and dismissing concerns that if he and Schwarzenegger split the Republican vote they will hand the election to Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante. He predicted Davis would be recalled and someone other than Democrat Bustamante would be elected to replace him.
