put a block on our phone so "anonymous callers" can't get through. (Telemarketing robots almost always register as "anonymous" or "unavailable" on a Caller ID.) If someone wants to bypass the block, they have to provide their name so I can decide if I want to pick it up or not. (Family and close friends have a special code which allows them to bypass the block if they're calling from an anonymous number.)
Every once in a while, a telemarketer will slip through because their number isn't hidden, or they actually have the nerve to give their name! Needless to say, I decline to answer those who give their name and the answering machine nails the few who don't hide their number.
At first, I was ticked off that I had to pay to avoid being harrassed, but the peace and quiet has been wonderful! The block is only a few dollars a month and it's well worth it. I used to get up to 5 calls a day, even on weekends, anywhere between 8am to 9pm ... it was ridiculous!
I can't remember the last time I actually had to deal with one - after several attempts, they realize they're not going to get through, so they take me off the list. :-)
If companies can put "No Soliciting" signs on their doors without violating free speech, why can't I put one on my phone?
Edited because I thought of something else to say ;-)
