Just a third of Arizonans give thumbs up to Bush second term

Barely one-third of Arizona voters say they would give President Bush a second term, a statewide poll revealed Thursday.

The 34 percent support for his re-election, with 44 percent preferring someone else and 22 percent undecided, reflects a dramatic plunge in popularity for Bush. In 2000, he beat Al Gore in Arizona by a margin of 6 percentage points, or nearly 100,000 votes of 1.5 million cast.

State Democratic Chairman Jim Pederson said the poll results are evidence that Arizonans are "increasingly frustrated with the Bush administration's performance on both the foreign and domestic fronts."

But Bob Fannin, state Republican chairman, said Bush enjoyed unsustainably high ratings earlier this year, and party leaders had predicted a decline. The drop fits a pattern seen at this point in the first terms of both Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, he said.

Bwhahahahahah! Yeah right! This isn't a decline it's a plummet. Reagan and Clinton may have had low approval numbers but they were trending upwards at this point and were also steady not manic like the Chimps.

same as Clinton's at this time in his term." I keep seeing articles quoting this statement. Is this true?? Or another repug lie? I just can't remember Clinton ever being this unpopular any time during his presidency. Anyone have a link?

In 1996, the Big Dog won Arizona in a walkover. That hadn't happened in a LONG time.

We have to remember that Arizona's a Republican state, but it's a Goldwater/McCain type of the beast (well, there is the egregious Sen. Kyle, a top Chimpy apologist). They don't generally take to the kind of rampant authoritarianism that Chimpy, Asscrack, et al represent.

I'd say the place is up for grabs.

The democrats rule in Arizona. There's no way little man bush will win this state. Arizona is one of the fastest growing states, and most people migrate here from democratic states, especially, Californians.

Starting a war is the only thing that has ever worked to raise his normally-abysmal numbers.

He's doing everything in his power to get someone to attack us, but all the usual suspects (even those who were in the pay of the CIA) have figured him out by now, so the BFEE will have to do it themselves.

Not that it would bring his poll numbers up all that much, but it would provide a pretext for declaring martial law, cranking up the draft, and cancelling the elections.

This state is extremely conservative----

HOWEVER, we currently have a Democrat for Gov, Attny General, and Phoenix just elected a Dem mayor.

AZ is a difficult state to really categorize. As a previous poster pointed out, we are the home of Goldwater, McCain, Babbitt, Mecham, Symington, etc. Lots of independence. The Libertarians are very strong here, so are the Greens as a matter of fact.
But make no mistake, in 2000 this was Bush country! So low numbers now should really be scaring the pants off the Repubs. This state should have been a no-brainer for them.
Now it will probably be a real battlefield.
Unfortunately, all our major newspapers are somewhere to the right of Fox News.

18. I don't live in AZ but just from what I know there are a lot of

well educated people who have migrated to that state... granted as you said they are a mix of libertarian to green...but they are intelligent and perhaps they have thought through the past few years and have figured out that Bush is a bad investment for the country.
