U.S. Soldier Killed, 1 Hurt in Rebel Raid West of Baghdad
An American soldier was killed this morning and another soldier was wounded when guerrillas used a roadside bomb and gunfire to attack a military convoy west of Baghdad, a United States military spokesman said.

The spokesman, Lieut. Col. George Krivo, told reporters in Baghdad that the attack took place just after 9 a.m. in Habbaniya, about 42 miles west of Baghdad.

After the bomb attack, soldiers exchanged fire with guerrillas for several hours, Colonel Krivo said, according to Reuters.

1. Good Morning IRAQNAM
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 10:56 AM by Mari333
An Iraqi man, fleeing on foot with his wife, three other women, a nephew and five children, said at least 10 houses had been destroyed. He refused to give his name.

"Is this the freedom that we were promised?" he asked. "I had to get my family out. ... The helicopters were firing almost nonstop. My 7-year-old is too young to hate but how can he not hate them (the Americans) after this?"

7. I've seen this before.
It reminds me of Viet-Nam.

They appear, shoot at us and kill a couple of our guys. We bomb, shoot ,destroy anything that moves "The Mad Minute"-- They run away and hide--- We look for them without success.

Next week they appear, shoot at us, (sound familiar?)

Except the press is tightly controlled. And most of this isn't getting out.

4. seems like more and more
"villages" are scenes of "daily" attacks

Lieutenant Colonel George Krivo told reporters in Baghdad the morning attack took place in the town of Habbaniya, about 45 miles from Baghdad -- an area where U.S. forces come under almost daily attack from guerrillas opposed to the U.S.-led occupation of Iraq.

I don't recall any media mentioning the name of Habbaniya before -

5. Somehow I don't think they want us there
In a separate incident, a child was reportedly shot dead by US soldiers in Hawija, west of Kirkuk.

A 10-year-old boy was killed and a 25-year-old man injured when troops opened fire on a demonstration by Saddam sympathisers, the AFP news agency quoted a local doctor as saying.

8. Something about the last line disturbs me..
..exchanged gunfire with guerillas for several hours. We're becoming the target of better-organized assaults than before. As bad as it is now, it sounds like it's going to get worse.

9. He thought he was fighting for Iraqi freedom
To Bush, he was just another pair of boots on the ground to secure the oil.

10. are news outlets going to continue to count?
The count now is 81 soldiers killed in hostile actions since May 1st. So in another 5 months is it going to be 278 soldiers have been killed since May 1st or by then exact numbers will mean nothing.

11. Eight-Hour Battle In Iraq - CBS
The relentless insurgency in the Sunni Muslim towns along the Euphrates River west of Baghdad on Monday killed an American soldier and wounded three others in two roadside bombings, one prompting an eight-hour firefight backed by attack aircraft, helicopters and tanks.

The two bombings hit U.S. military convoys in the adjacent towns of Habaniyah and Khaldiyah at about 9 a.m. The bombing in Khaldiyah prompted the big firefight in which two soldiers were injured and a civilian was hurt, according to Lt. Col. Jeff Swisher, of the 1st Infantry Division.

"At 9 this morning an American patrol was ambushed by IEDs (roadside bombs), RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades) and small arms fire. The patrol returned fire and support was called in," Swisher said, adding that 14 Iraqis had been detained.
