WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A naturalized U.S. citizen and Muslim activist has been arrested for unauthorized visits to Libya and for violating sanctions against the North African nation, according to court documents released on Monday.
Abdul Rahman al-Amoudi, who was arrested at Dulles International Airport on Sunday as he returned to the United States from London, was ordered detained by a magistrate judge in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia.
FBI Assistant Director Michael Mason described it as "an important arrest" and said al-Amoudi "has been under investigation for some time."
According to an affidavit filed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agent, law enforcement officials raided al-Amoudi's house in Virginia in March as part of an investigation into financing of terrorist groups.
