City Is Scanning for Faces in the Crowd
http://www.latimes.com/la-na-facescan29sep29,1,2318698.story

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Twelve feet above the sidewalk, three cameras scan the faces of unsuspecting crowds on Atlantic Avenue. In a police control room a few blocks away, Lt. Dennis Santos sits before a bank of screens, holding a joystick that enables him to pivot the cameras and zoom in or out. With the help of computers, he is looking for terrorists and criminals.

4. He's looking for terrorists and criminals.
If we're looking for Big Brother, we need look no further. He's alive and well in Virginia Beach -- maybe belongs to the 700 Club.

6. Whats funny is we "PAID" for those cameras...the other city that used them
(I think Tampa)...got them for free and had no hits..I dont think they have been productive here either..(Va Beach)

It's so rethuglican here, they probably scan crowds for democratic t-shirts.

7. Tampa discontinued using them
after deciding that they were a total failure and a waste of time (not to mention a civil libertarian nightmare, my opinion, obviously not theirs or they would not have done it to start with).

8. The company that made the "features-matching" software
eventually had to admit that it needs a lot more work before it will do what it's supposed to do. That admission didn't cause them to give back the money that Tampa had paid them, however.
