White House will cooperate but not investigate CIA leak

The White House will cooperate with the Justice Department in its initial inquiry into who leaked the classified identity of a CIA operative, but will not launch an internal probe and will not ask for an independent investigation, a spokesman said Monday. The operative is the wife of a former U.S. ambassador who had been critical of the Bush's administration's handling of intelligence on Iraq.

Honestly, what do you expect the White House to say? That they WOULDN'T cooperate with an investigation being conducted by their OWN Justice Department? The more important fact is that in the three months that have passed since Bob Novak disclosed the identity of a covert CIA agent, the White House had done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to identify the source of the leak.

Bush Says Capitol Hill Leaks Unacceptable

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush on Tuesday rebuked members of Congress for leaking sensitive information about the U.S. response to the Sept. 11 attacks, saying, "This can't stand."

"We can't have leaks of classified information. It's not in our nation's interest. We're now in extraordinary times," Bush said during a Rose Garden news conference with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

Aides said Bush was angered by leaks last week after CIA officials briefed the Senate Intelligence Committee and reportedly advised committee members about the high probability of more attacks against American targets.

In response, Bush told key members of his Cabinet in an Oct. 5 memo that "until you receive further notice from me" only eight leading members of Congress could be briefed on the U.S. response to the attacks, instead of the larger group that would expect to be told.
