Dean sets new Guinness World Record: Largest Phone Conference Call (3,557)
Edited on Mon Sep-29-03 09:26 PM by w4rma
27 Hours to Go-- You Made History!

As of 9 pm, you have raised $12,959,254 through 153,645 contributions. And just a little while ago, you broke the record by making the largest conference call in history when 3,557 telephones got online for the Dean National House Call!

The money from the house calls will be added to the bats when it is tabulated... probably within the next hour or so! Let's keep the bat going!

Largest Telephone Conference Call
A total of 3,310 callers, from around the UK, took part in a BT-organized telephone conference call with pop group S-Club Seven, at Sound Republic, Leicester Square, London, England, on September 10, 2000.

4. My cell phone call was one of them!
The people at the house party tonight who had a cell phone were asked to call in to boost the numbers. It was so cool!

Dean's answers to the questions were great. I really liked his answer re race relations in response to the house party from Memphis. I hope they publish the transcript soon!

5. Isn't That Just Numbers Inflation?
I mean, if they were already attending, it seems kind of contrived to ask them to call in again via cell phone.

6. come on... admit it... its a cute gimmick
would bet that there were at least a few cell phones involved in the London 2000 previous world record.

Look none of our candidates has the power to do the kind of fundraising that bush can do - 2,000 plate dinners for 200 people. The more success any of our candidates have - even with cute gimmicks - in raising money in nontraditional ways (in terms of modern presidential campaigns) - the better.

Think of it this way, if Dean keeps being successful and doesn't win the nomination, then whoever does win it - will have been forced to get nonconventional and be even better at it than Dean's campaign. That would make that campaign better poised to deal with the Bush campaign.

Big Picture. Don't forget the big picture.

8. Key Word Being "Gimmick"
To the extent that certain news coverage and polls depend on accurate numbers, I guess I just have a problem with inflation of this nature. And that's regardless of who does it.

I mean, suppose candidate X claims 1,000,000 Meetup members, but it's really just old members registering under new accounts?

Hell, I have a minor problem with DU boasting as many members as it does, without excluding banned/closed accounts and lapsed members.

I guess it's just a pet peeve of mine.

10. It wasn't a record for # of parties -- it was a record for # of people
# of phones used is closer to the actual total listening, but still really low
