WASHINGTON -- President Bush touches down in Chicago today for a fund-raising lunch that local organizers estimate will raise more than $3.5 million.

The $2,000-a-person lunch at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers will benefit his 2004 re-election drive. The political event will be followed by a meeting with business leaders to discuss the economy at the University of Chicago's Gleacher Center, off Michigan Avenue near the Chicago River.

Though Bush comes to a heavily Democratic state won by Al Gore in 2000, corporate Illinois is dominated by Republicans.

The lunch is chaired by Aon chief Patrick Ryan and 22 co-chairmen who each raised at least $100,000. One of the co-chairmen is real estate developer Tony Rezko, a big fund-raiser for Gov. Blagojevich -- a Democrat.

CHICAGO -- President Bush raised at least $3.6 million for his re-election campaign at a luncheon Tuesday, but even Republicans concede he will have a tough time winning Illinois, a Democratic-leaning state with a fractured GOP.
"We're under no illusions but we're working hard," said Bob Kjellander, an Illinois member of the Republican National Committee who is chairman of Bush's re-election campaign in Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.

"Illinois is a battleground state, and he was in it until the end here last time and I believe he will be this time as well."

The Republican president, who lost Illinois by 12 percentage points in 2000 to Al Gore, faces long odds, political observers said.

CHICAGO — President Bush pledged to finish what his administration had begun, both abroad and at home, as he raised $6 million more for his re-election campaign with visits to two electorally pivotal Midwestern industrial states.

Brushing aside rising Democratic criticism about his handling of the economy and Iraq, the president told supporters on Tuesday, "We're laying the foundations for greater prosperity and economic vitality and more jobs across America."

The president spoke following disappointing reports on consumer confidence and Midwest business activity.

Bush was traveling later to Cincinnati for another fund-raiser, and was expected to have raised his campaign bank account to more than $82 million by day's end.

Together, Illinois and Ohio, two Rust Belt industrial states, have lost 280,000 manufacturing jobs since Bush took office. (snip/...)
