President Bush and Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean sailed to new money records on Tuesday as the 2004 White House contenders made a final push for cash on the last day of the fund-raising quarter.
Bush made his biggest one-day haul of the campaign so far, with fund-raisers in Chicago and Cincinnati expected to bring in $5.3 million for a total of nearly $50 million raised in July, August and September, spokeswoman Nicolle Devenish said.

The Internet-driven Dean campaign updated its fund-raising totals hourly on its Web site as it neared its goal of $15 million raised in July, August and September. That amount would likely triple the three-month total brought in by his nearest rivals in the 10-strong Democratic field vying for the right to challenge Bush in 2004.
Dean's grass-roots organizing and strong criticism of the Iraq war has pushed him to the top of the polls in the crucial early decision states of Iowa and New Hampshire. It also gave him the lead in second-quarter fund raising, when he brought in $7.6 million.
