WASHINGTON -- Howard Dean's energized, Internet-driven campaign left his competitors further in the dust Tuesday as the race for cash in the Democratic presidential race ended its third quarter.
The former Vermont governor, once considered a long shot, told supporters, "You have the power," in an early evening e-mail as his Web site showed the campaign closing in on its goal of collecting $15 million before the midnight deadline.

'Time running short'
Michael J. Malbin, executive director of the Campaign Finance Institute and a political scientist at the State University of New York at Albany, said the results so far show that only Dean has established himself as a serious candidate who can broaden his base.
He said that he would be studying the campaign's actual reports later this month to see if any of the other candidates can break through that barrier. "It's conceivable," he said. "But time is running short" before the whirlwind primary season that begins in January.
