Most Americans Suspicious of White House but Doubt Bush Knew of Leak

Nearly seven in 10 Americans believe a special prosecutor should be named to investigate allegations that Bush administration officials illegally leaked the name of a covert CIA operative to journalists, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The poll, taken after the Justice Department announced that it had opened a criminal probe into the matter, pointed to several matters of concern for the White House as aides to President Bush decide how to limit the damage.

"Americans exhibited little tolerance of the classified leaks and those responsible. If a White House official is the culprit, 91 percent believe that person should be fired and 82 percent believe that person should face criminal charges."

Anyone want to bet there's some sweatin' and jivin' and spinnin' and lyin' at the White House at this very moment?

I'll bet they're circlin' the wagons and deciding what low level flunky is going to take the blame to protect the truly guilty?

It'll be some 28 year-old Assistant to a Deputy Assistant to the Deputy Chief of White House Information Operations who did this on his own initiative and didn't clear it with his boss, and he's already turned in his resignation and he apoligizes to Valery Plame and the CIA and to all of America and he's devestated that he let this wonderful Predident down.

4. Even if they try a tactic like that

the fact remains that "someone" with access to classified information told "someone else", be it Rove or some junior aide who was NOT cleared. They in turn passed it to Novak et al. "Someone's" head must roll. They are the leak.

This is interesting because MSNBC's online poll (yes I know MSNBC sucks, but still it was an internet poll) was showing about 53% felt that it was a witchhunt and politiclaly motivated. Hmm...
