I know several users of it, and they swear by it, as to it's ability to help them cope with severe long-term pain. Two of them have multiple sclerosis, and another has a different type of incurable spinal disease. And when the pain gets really bad (think some late stage cancers), they bring in the MSContin(Morphine Sulfate).

and I got broke up pretty good. Oxycontin kept me from thoughts of the worst kind--I could not have taken the pain otherwise.

HOWEVER---It was the most addictive thing I have ever done. I quit cold turkey earlier this month when I had to begin driving again--And it was a TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE to come off of that stuff.

God help those who live in pain, and God help those who are addicted. There is nothing easy about this....

And "So all these vacations he's taken were probably to detox or rehab then, THAT explains things!" I think we're just so used to let-downs when it comes to justice being delivered to some of these, err, people that we're automatically in let-down mode when something new comes up.

I doubt Rush used the pills in anything like the quantity mentioned in the story, but my instinct (which is generally disasterous, to be honest) is that it is largely accurate.
