Remember Cossell and his "Little Monkey" reference to Joe Washington of the Colts (Baltimore at the time)

In the wake of his controversial statements regarding Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, Rush Limbaugh has resigned from his position on ESPN's NFL pregame show. ESPN has accepted the resignation.

Limbaugh issued a statement late Wednesday night in which he wrote:

"My comments this past Sunday were directed at the media and were not racially motivated. I offered an opinion. This opinion has caused discomfort to the crew, which I regret.

If the Fairness Doctrine is revived (as some candidates have advocated), it could have such effects.

Demagoguery is deflated with lucid opposition, a reason The Cyst long ago foreswore the occasional 'guest' ACLUer or whoever. He had a plainly discernible tendency to shrivel on air (quite a feat, but I heard it whenever he allowed debate, way back when).

revenge. I have sent letters to all of the candidates, urging them, if they win the presidency, that they will, first thing, and by executive order, reinstitute the Doctrine. Without it, our democracy is doomed. The Fourth Estate must be restored, and brought back into the service of the citizens, rather than a corrupt elite.

What a bunch of cheap shot, irresponsible assholes. "And Chris Berman's a Democrat"....what the hell does Berman have in it. He's been with ESPN practically from the get go!
The way i'm understanding this is that they were going to bring the hammer down on Pigboy anyhow.

George Bodenheimer, President, ESPN and ABC Sports, issued the following response:

"We accept his resignation and regret the circumstances surrounding this. We believe that he took the appropriate action to resolve this matter expeditiously."

"To: All

I would like to take a moment to ask for donations.

It should be clear to all conservatives by now that the left intends to demonize us. They don't just disagree with us, they hate us. And worse, they want to get other people to hate us.

Places like Free Republic drive the left batty.

Please donate. Thanks for your consideration.

83. His arrogance is doing him in....
http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/news/article.adp?id=20031002001109990004

Limbaugh did not back down during his syndicated radio talk show Wednesday.

''All this has become the tempest that it is because I must have been right about something,'' Limbaugh said. ''If I wasn't right, there wouldn't be this cacophony of outrage that has sprung up in the sports writer community.''

---snip---

Limbaugh on Wednesday reiterated that he doesn't think McNabb is a bad player, just that he isn't as good as some media members think he is.

''This is such a mountain out of a molehill,'' he said. ''There's no racism here, there's no racist intent whatsoever.''

---snip----

Seven black quarterbacks started games last weekend. Two other blacks who regularly start, Daunte Culpepper of Minnesota and Michael Vick of Atlanta, were out with injuries.

Asked about Limbaugh's comments, Eagles defensive end N.D. Kalu said: ''He speaks well, he's well-read, but he's an idiot.''

88. Drudge matters because
he gets a couple of BILLION clicks a year ande very single newsroom and TV station as well as countless reporters get important cues from him. Many DUers feign to avoid his site but end-up reading it by default because every move Matt Drudge makes is reported here anyway.
Besides, Drudge primarily recycles other outlets headlines...and he's been all-over the outing of Valerie Plume.

32. Ahh...but now EVERYONE knows he is a racist pig!
That is the beauty of this whole deal. I know everyone was upset when he was given the ESPN gig, but it was only a matter of time before he spewed his ignorant hate on the air.

And it reached a whole lot of people who would never crawl into his "EIB" sewer to hear him say it.

A lot of people now will be very interested in who is paying to advertise on this pig's show.

Man, I feel good about this!

139. And maybe it might had been better for us if he had been on longer
So that more of the public can see his true nature.

How many people don't listen to wind bag that call themselves repugs? And if they heard his trash they might convert to Democrats?

But ESPN could not allow wind bag to remain with them without suffering the consequences. Sure they had a rise in their viewers but how long would that had continued?

His resignation. How much you all want to bet that he didn't resign on his own. That he was forced to resign or be fired.

Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 11:32 PM by alphafemale
And he didn't have half their courage even though they faced a far fiercer storm.

They stood their ground, and sold out concerts because they knew in their hearts they were right.

Limbaugh's not only a racist idiot he's also a whining wuss. And he knows in his heart he's wrong.

Far better for them to come down on him and tell him to can the racist commentary, and remove his schtick from his toolkit.

this just gives him more "PC" fodder.

Then again, maybe that's what they tried to do and he really did quit. Dunno.

If he was FIRED, he could claim he was a victim of the liberal media. He could claim that he stood up to them until they forced him out.

But he RESIGNED. He QUIT. Appartently, even he doesn't really believe the shit he is spewing, or he would have stuck it out.

He is a frightened, whiny, spineless, no-nothing hack, and by RESIGNING, he proved it.

75. Common sense deprivation syndrome
Now Rush:

You know how you like to rag on us black folks on your radio show, but you don't call us "black folks". You like to call us "welfare queens" and "pimps, bums, gang-bangers, juvenile delinquents" and the like. And since you have sponsors that support your opinions you can probably say anything you damned well please on your talk show.

Now, you wanna be in the NFL. I take it physically and mentally you couldn't hack it in football in even an airconditioned room with the big boys like Warren Sapp, Dave Butkus, Refrigerator Perry. Instead you swing a deal with ESPN so at least you can pretend you know something about sports. I don't listen to your radio show and I don't watch ESPN. But I can tell once you felt comfortable with the ESPN set, you let your common sense lapse. You paid for it with this resignation tonight.

However, lemme give you a clue I have about your audiences. I daresay that the ESPN audience is far more ethnically diverse than your radio show. WTF were you thinking when you made the assumption that the media was playing up McNabb only because he was black? See what you said plays into your talk show rhetoric when you describe us as "Welfare queens and pimps". We can't be ever good on our own merit right? (Unless we are Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas or Ward Connerly) And when we just happen to be good, it's got to be an effing fluke or the media wants us to look good. See you couldn't call McNabb a "former (any derogatory classification for black folk)" so you had to discount any abilities he had. That is where your lack of common sense shows.

Rush, don't blame the liberal media, it was YOU who opened your big mouth. No one put you up to this, this was your big ass problem. Hope you don't lose your day job over it. Get over it and entertain your freeper crowd...

79. Thank God Almighty...
We are free at last. The hiring of Rush Limbaugh sent me,a rabid fan of the violence filled, brutality based sport of football,(which i love dearly)into a near psychotic rage.I wondered what I could have done an a conscienious objecter to deserve such a horrible punishment. My mind raced at the things that which my apathy would have warranted such a racist and bigoted human being hired at a post in which the HUGE majority of America(Right and Left)would be subjected to his idiotic philosophies. My only reward is that his stupidity would cost him his job before he can subliminaly infect every football fan,who are,on the majority, casual political observers, with his idioic and disgusting views. The previous week he made a comment about the NBA,an obviously veiled comment to those familiar with his right wing agenda, which wasnt picked up by the mainstream(liberal?)media. The lucky SOB managed to sneak by another week before the entire nation caught him.Shame on you,ESPN,for hiring someone with a proven and documentable history of racist and politically motivated point of views.Shame on you for not doing your homework and accepting ratings as the standard at which someone is judged.I hope America views you as what you are, another media source hungry for whatever advertising dollars you can grab, whether it gives a bigot airtime or not.National treasure indeed...

84. He was in genuine danger of losing it all
Rush saw what was happening, and quit to save his career. This was escalating quickly, with Sharpton calling a boycott, and Dean and Clark calling for him to step down. He was too big a distraction to ESPN, who can't afford to be painted as a racist network. ESPN would have had to fire him.

Being fired for being a racist would have destroyed him. A few more days of this type of criticism would have hurt him. There is a Limbaugh audience who want to hear his racist rants, but much of his audience is made up of casual listeners who never really think about Limbaugh's comments. He could lose a lot of them by being labelled that way. If he starts losing a fraction of his audience, ten percent or so, he starts getting dropped from some stations, and his revenues go down, and he starts a nose dive that he might not recover from, even though he would have undoubtedly kept a large portion of his audience.

He's now untouchable for television, except for FOX, perhaps. He's failed twice, and this time in a big way. But it would have been much worse if this had dragged out a couple more days. He would have become a liability to his own party. Candidates who appeared on his show would wind up having to defend themselves just like candidates who speak at Bob Jones U. That makes him useless to his own party, and that would mean he would be out of a job.

The damage may already be done. It's a close thing now. Is he Jimmy the Greek, or John Rocker, or Trent Lott? Or did he resign just in time? Don't know yet, but if this had gone another couple of days, he would have been through, and not just his sports career. As it stands, maybe he will survive, since no one really expected better of him, anyway. But his parting shot didn't help. He claimed he stood by his comments, refused to apologize, and reiterated that he was right, even claiming that the furor over his comments proved he was right. That will play to the core of his audience, but it may not play to the casual listeners. Or to his advertisers.

He may be done. He's at least wobbly.

You all see the big picture, right? Liberals are fighting back, and we are finally scoring body blows. We knocked Rush out of the fight. We've got Bush tottering a little, even getting his own party to question him over the leak and over the Iraqi forged evidence. It's been a good week, for a change. And we are finally showing signs of not backing down, of fighting for what's right. Our candidates united against Rush on this. They are uniting against Bush. Our message is getting shouted louder and louder, and people are finding it harder to ignore. And the more they hear us, the more they know we are right.

Good signs. Let's keep shouting.

89. RUSH should NOT have resigned
Stay with me here.

I hate this man. He is a vile, insensitive, ideologically naive, fear-mongering, hypocritical scumbag…BUT a REAL man would not have resigned.

The fact Limbaugh chose to play the race card w/ Donovan McNabb shows what a potential (I use this word for objectivity) racist he is. However, quitting the show before having a chance to go back on it to face the fire shows what a complete coward (or wussie) he really is.

It is fine Limbaugh thinks Donovan is over-rated, he is entitled to that opinion. However, Limbaugh didn’t come out and say he stands by his comments, but apologizes for the insensitive tone of them. His response was, “See…people are mad…that shows I am right.” … AND then he freaking quits.

Limbaugh got a football gig, made a vitriolic and repulsive statement about black Quarterbacks based in NOTHING factual, gets taken to task by the masses (Eagle radio commentary Mike Quick called him a right-wing bigot who shouldn’t be doing football shows) and then runs back to the safe domain of “Rush Rules” like the weasel he is with his tail tucked between his fat ass.

This isn’t the type of action of ANY MAN who should be held in virtue like Rush gets from the 20 million ditto-monkeys he claims to have as a loyal base. This man never admitted he was MAYBE wrong, at least in the way he couched Donovan as over-rated and he didn’t have enough backbone to go back on the show where Tom Jackson was probably laying in wait ready to pounce the moment the next incendiary comment came spewing from Rush’ mouth.

This reminds me of a party Limbaugh and Hillary Clinton were both at. Evidentially, Limbaugh apologized to Hillary for his remarks about Chelsea. He wasn’t MAN ENOUGH to stand behind his comments (as absurd as they were) in the face of the mother of the young girl he had ripped…NOR…did he go onto his program and tell his listeners that he was out-of-line to bash a young girl like he did.

Rush Limbaugh is arguably the biggest pu**y alive in America today. He is beneath contempt and is a truly vile, pathetic human being.

If ESPN/ABC/Disney don't like controversy, then WHY did they hire Limpnuts in the first place?

Him resigning from a show where his views are being heard by the mainstream (and not just political ditto-monkeys), where he can't frame the debate and where he can't squash dissent fits the profile.

I won't believe he was fired until I see it in print. The word is he resigned, quit, gave up, pussed out...Sounds plausible to me.

Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 08:03 AM by underpants
This morning on the Today Show he (you should have heard the SIGH JC Watts let out ) said that he didn't understand how Rush got on ESPN to start with. He wasn't angry and didn't raise his voice, the whole interview (Katie him and JC on three screens) was very subdued and reasonable.

JC of course tried to change the subject to the fact that Rush really doesn't know what he is talking about in terms or McNabb being overrated.

I never understood why he was on either. I do think that the heads at Disney realized that this was not the kind of controversy they wanted but "pussed/wimped out" will do for now.

95. Although I have sympathy for his addiction
I cannot say that I am sorry to see the hypocritical A$$HOLE go down. His hateful rhetoric has caused so much pain to so many people. I, personally, hope he rots in HIS version of hell!

100. He should not have resigned
For his free speech argument to hold water he should have continued until he was fired.

Running like a wuss is not the way to stand for free speech.

I disagree with what he said - but he has the right to say it.

Good. Now I can watch that show again. What was ESPN thinking when they signed the cyst and the ugly growth on it in the first place?

The growth on the cyst is not a political commentator, it's a hate monger that makes a living by getting one group of Americans to hate another group based on their political opinions. Hello Di$ney?

105. The Ents awoke
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 08:30 AM by Ivory_Tower
Coming in late on this, so I figure nobody will actually see it, but here it goes anyway:

1) Does anyone else feel like the Ents have come out of the forest? That is, the NFL and the sports media HAD been saying effectively that "Rush is an entertainer, and popular, and knows sports. We have no issue with his politics." Then he delivers this racist broadside against the sports world, and they come to life. Well, with the exception of ESPN, who was defending him because its ratings went up. But this leads to:

2) The icy statement by the NFL must have sent a chill through the accounting department at ESPN and Disney. I don't recall the exact quote, but the NFL basically distanced itself from ESPN by emphasizing that they don't hire the ESPN broadcasters. I think that might have been a shot across ESPN's bow. Remember, ESPN only broadcasts NFL games because they purchased the rights to do so. When that contract expires, the NFL could sell the rights to someone else instead, leaving ESPN out in the cold. If ESPN continued to support racist sports commentators, I'm the sure the NFL would have second thoughts about renewing its contract. So what woke the NFL up? The comment itself had a role, certainly, but I think the NFL (and ESPN) was effectively slapped by:

3) McNabb's press conference. I didn't see it, but what I read of his comments looked to me to be brilliant. Think about this -- McNabb had, what, 15, 20, 30 minutes total to talk about this? Rush has 3 hours a day, five days a week to say whatever he wants about the issue. There was no way that McNabb could take on Rush head-to-head in the media. Instead, McNabb graciously states that what Rush did is done, and then he criticizes (with more disappointment than anger) the people around Rush for not calling him on the comment! If you can't attack someone more powerful than you, then go after the people around him and knock out his supports. I think McNabb stung both the ESPN and the NFL with his implication that they were tacitly supporting a racist, and it snowballed from there.

McNabb's comments helped get the Ents out of the forest to do battle.

(Edited for snazzier subject :) )

107. Maybe he'll sign on with FOXSports
The viewership spillover FOXSports gets from FOXNews may mean a better viewer demographic for Rush. You get plenty of hate from FNews, why not FSports?

111. Don't Like McNabb Either
I wish McNabb would resign!
He is being cut slack he doesn't deserve (for whatever reason it may be).
And the Eagles defense does not get nearly enough credit for the team's success.

129. McNabb IS overrated though.
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 02:43 PM by BraveDave
Just my two cents. I may not be a fan of Rush's but I do watch football. If someone already stated something similar, I appoligize, I didn't have time to read the other 128 posts.

Maybe Limbaugh knows football better than what you think.

McNabb had his best year last year. His QB rating was 86.0.

Manning last year had a bad year last year his rating was 88.8.

McNabb's lifetime rating is 75.5, he is at 51.1 so far this year.

Culpepper had a rating last year of 75.3, a lifetime rating of 86.3 and is at 108.0 so far this season. Limbaugh said nothing of Culpepper, perhaps because Culpepper is a better player.

Randle El is one of Limbaugh's favorite players. Why, because he is black? No, Antwan can play.

I am not saying Rush is right but looking at the stats I can see what he is saying. McNabb is overrated.

Oh, and Sharpton calling Rush a racist has to be the best example of the pot calling the kettle black I've seen in a while.

138. Whether McNabb actually is overrated is irrelevant to Limbaugh's firing.
Limbaugh did not present a cogent argument, such as you have made, that McNabb is overrated. Limbaugh asserted that McNabb was overrated and attributed that to racial bias in the media in favor of black players. Limbaugh did not cite a single example of that bias or identify anyone in the media who expressed that bias. Limbaugh was merely peddling his bigotry to the equally bigoted shittoheads.

135. hey BRAVE dave
Has it ever occurred to you that if Donovan had Marvin Harrison and Edgerrin James on his side of the ball, perhaps his numbers might be better? The people around him on offense would be second stringers on most other teams in the league. How many times has Peyton been to his conference championship game? Did he finish second in the MVP voting his first full season as a starter? Donovan is the sole offensive weapon on the team. Meaning defenses can build their entire scheme around stopping Donovan. Not so with Peyton.

You're wrong and so is Rush.

140. I hope you're kidding
Otherwise, you really don't know jack about football.

Brett Favre, John Elway, Troy Aikman. These are 3 three quarterbacks who had much worse numbers than McNabb over their first couple years in the league, and those are just three off the top of my head. Taking two games out of his career and saying "look how bad he was! Limbaugh MUST be right!" doesn't carry much weight with me. Anyone can have a bad two game stretch. Assessing McNabb's worth to his team and his overall ability based on those two games is ridiculous.
