DeLay's 'Salute': A Wave Goodbye? (W.P.)
DeLay's 'Salute': A Wave Goodbye?

By Mark Leibovich
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, May 2, 2005; Page C01

As if things weren't bad enough for Rep. Tom DeLay: Now his friends are planning a tribute in his honor. Not to be cynical about this, but (oh, what the heck) you know you're in trouble in Washington when this happens.

"The difference between a tribute and a eulogy is that during a tribute there is actually one person who believes every word," says Tom Daschle, who was the subject of his own tribute on March 1 -- four months after he was voted out of office. He is awaiting another tribute next month, this one hosted by civil rights groups.

If form holds, the salute to DeLay, which is scheduled for May 12 at the Capital Hilton, will feature a series of speeches testifying to his greatness and scores of hushed table conversations about whether the Texas Republican will survive as House majority leader and, more important, who might succeed him if he doesn't.

"Tom DeLay has been a stalwart champion of conservative principles in the Congress," reads an invitation to the salute, which is sponsored by the American Conservative Union Foundation. Tickets cost $250, $2,000 per table or $10,000 to be a member of the host committee. "This is a testimonial banquet, not a fundraising event," the invite says, adding that all proceeds will go toward defraying the costs of the dinner.

3. Massive Dump
The current state of the Republican party reminds me of a massive dump I once took. I flushed and flushed but, it would not go away it just sat there swirling around the bowl.

Whether it is Tom Delay, George Bush, or Dick Cheney it seems that no matter how outrageous their actions are they seem to survive any attempts to flush them away.

I eventually gave up and got out the plunger, when the stench becomes bad enough the people will will eventually resort to the plunger as distasteful as it may be.

7. What a scream!
And so incredibly on the mark. If JK had the ability to create such colorful imagery, he'd be President today.

I'll be watching for more posts from you, TexasChief. Thanks for the laugh.

8. if we'd had a fair election, Gore or Kerry would be president today!
I'm not sure it had anything to do with colorful imagery.

not to poke or anything, but that's a sore point for me.

17. Bullshit!
Kerry probably wouldn't have been the candidate were it not for an upset in Iowa, and I was one of those Iowans who supported him, worked for him, and contributed to his campaign (a decision I truly regret). My daughter was a Kerry delegate at the convention. I met Kerry and visited with him here - these guys practically camp in our backyards. He was very impressive.

Then he left Iowa and managed to transform himself into a mealymouthed, weak, fumbling, bumbling, pathetic excuse for a candidate. When the liars from the Swift Boat Veterans attacked, he actually said that he honored the chicken-hawk's service! He was a complete pansy. He even left a ton of money laying on the table that could have turned the election. You think he'd be President today if the election hadn't been rigged? Hell, even Kerry doesn't agree with you! He walked away from an election challenge before anyone even knew what was going on.

Kerry is a very good man. He has what it takes to be President. He wanted to win so badly that I suspect that he was simply afraid of committing a fatal mistake. Consequently, he came across as a typical politician instead of the real Kerry - the guy who spent several months here in Iowa. Did Kerry's communication skills (or lack thereof) contribute to the terrible outcome? Hell yes! We needed a candidate who wasn't afraid to speak plainly and bluntly.

And that's a very sore point for me.

22. I agree that he could have been stronger in his response to SBL,
but Kerry alone is not to blame for the loss. It was predicted months before by those upset about the voting machines. I can see why this is a sore point for you, but I am not so sure it would have made much of a difference. The fuckers across the aisle would have come up with more lies and bs to counter any ground he gained, it was a dirty fight. You can't win a dirty fight by playing fair.

I wasn't in love with Kerry, but I was in love with beating Shrub. I volunteered too, and was heartbroken when we 'lost'.

-peace

My fellow Americans, this administration reminds me of a huge dump I took the other day. Teresa and I tried for hours, but it just wouldn't go down! But with your help, come November 2nd we're gonna flush that giant piece of crap sitting in the Oval Office right out into the Potomac!

Works for me.

toilet is the new American Standard Diebold edition?

Or maybe your refill valve isn't using an open-source output?

11. or perhaps a downpayment
for Martha Stewart's consultation on how to redecorate a jail cell?

but I don't think he will see any jail time -- GOPers aren't held responsibile or accountable because it's never their fault.

should DeLay get the boot - you will find him in some cushy lobbyist or consulting job
