Attorney General Is Closely Linked to Inquiry Figures

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1 Deep political ties between top White House aides and Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) have put him into a delicate position as the Justice Department (news - web sites) begins a full investigation into whether administration officials illegally disclosed the name of an undercover C.I.A. officer.

Karl Rove, President Bush (news - web sites)'s top political adviser, whose possible role in the case has raised questions, was a paid consultant to three of Mr. Ashcroft's campaigns in Missouri, twice for governor and for United States senator, in the 1980's and 1990's, an associate of Mr. Rove said on Wednesday.

Jack Oliver, the deputy finance chairman of Mr. Bush's 2004 re-election campaign, was the director of Mr. Ashcroft's 1994 Senate campaign, and later worked as Mr. Ashcroft's deputy chief of staff.

<snip>

On Wednesday the administration worked to ensure that no Republicans in Congress broke ranks and called for an independent inquiry, and it sought to portray the former diplomat at the center of the case as a partisan Democrat.

3. Is this the same Jack Oliver
who is in the past has been referred to as a Bush Loyalist and was hired by Karl Rove to be deputy chairman of the RNC? This is beyond ridiculous. This doesn't even have the appearance of being a conflict of interest, it is a conflict of interest.

"In Virginia in June, he (Rove) addressed both the state party convention and a gathering of well-heeled Republican donors hosted by Gilmore. Rove, by the way, negotiated the selection of Gilmore as RNC chairman last winter with the governor's chief of staff, Boyd Marcus. Gilmore had balked at being "general chairman" with little authority. He got the full chairman's job, but Rove assigned Bush loyalist Jack Oliver to the committee in the newly created post of deputy chairman."

4. That's because he knew that Gilmore is an idiot.
I lived in Virginia for 25 years, Gilmore is a joke.

2. This should nudge the poll numbers.
What, 69% didn't think justice (Ashcroft) was the right investigative tool for this Tuesday and yesterday? OK, now the Ashcroft/Rove connections are on mainstream news (thank you, journalists who finally 'get it'). With some back up noise to keep the legs under this angle, we can make those numbers climb and get the congress critters to wake up and smell the independent prosecutor!

5. The independent prosecutor will be appointed
by Ashcroft or a 3 judge panel (laugh). We better be careful what we wish for here. It may be K. Starr,Henry Kissinger - any of those fine upstanding Repukes - you know the ones Orrin Hatch always says are above reproach and held in high esteem. Yeah, right!
