47. Watch for the words "rowdy Hollywood set" to be repeated ad nauseum
That's how Arnold explained what had happened...It was just a "rowdy Hollywood set" and he may have been a little wild for which he is sorry...but he says he didn't do anything wrong....I've heard the "rowdy Hollywood set" remark from other right wing apologists...:puke:

6. He was on CNN admitting some of it to a campaign rally.
I guess he is trying to innoculate himself. How can anyone who really cares about California support this guy?
Then there is the double standard. We seen how Clinton has been demonized for far less substantiated charges. Iguess if you're a RepuKKKe, you can get away with anything.

(snip) Schwarzenegger Says He's 'Behaved Badly'

SAN DIEGO - Gubernatorial front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger acknowledged that he has "behaved badly" to women and offered an apology Thursday.

Schwarzenegger's remarks, as he kicked off a four-day bus tour of the state in the final days of the recall campaign, came after a Los Angeles Times story published Thursday in which six women accused him of sexually harassing and groping them.

"When I am governor I want to prove to the women that I will be a champion for the women, a champion of the women," Schwarzenegger said at a rally in San Diego. "Now let's go from the dirty politics to the future of California."

The crowd of Schwarzenegger supporters interrupted him with cheers.

58. he gives a new meaning to "dirty politics" (his word)
How can anyone hear these stories - and not realize that this guy would TAKE this act to the Governor's mansion. As I read the LA Times story I sadly asked myself... he only keeps doing this - for YEARS - if he often gets away with it. You don't turn that off. The grossest was making a waitress lean in so he could ask her to go to the ladies room and.... touch herself... and bring her finger back to him. Can you imagine the sexual harrassment lawsuits ala Paula Jones that are lurking in the closets? I am amazed at his cavalier response. He really thinks that women are stupid. And he knows that the media coverage will mostly protect him (as in - many women still have not heard of his behavior because he has been so protected by the media.)

14. It is important the next few days for these women to be
interviewed on TV, periodicals, etc..and talk about the humiliation of sexual harrassment. They better not spin this as a good guy coming clean of his past deeds. How much can he get away with?????? It is truly disturbing that slack Arnold has been given. But I guess after Bush, I shouldn't be surprised.
Also, does this mean, that people will slide on the economy, Iraq, environment etc...for their "good guy" in 2004?

36. What an idiot... He didn't apologize to the women, now did he?
While it is too late, anyway... he could have helped himself slightly by a broad mea culpa that included his plans to offer direct apologies in person to the women he humiliated....

Surely MOST people will see just how insincere and self-serving this is. It is hard for me to feel any sympathy for Maria, but geez what public humiliation she is being subjected to. Yeah, he really loves her, right?

68. what a rude post
This is, as you said, a discussion board, which would at least imply that as things are discussed, there are going to be differences in opinion/viewpoint. I don't see the need to call the guy names just because you don't agree with his perspective. If you think he's being defeatist, why not try giving him a hand up? If you already have him on ignore, then why even bother posting that?

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Gubernatorial front-runner Arnold Schwarzenegger acknowledged that he has "behaved badly" to women and offered an apology Thursday.

Schwarzenegger's remarks, as he kicked off a four-day bus tour of the state in the final days of the recall campaign, came after a Los Angeles Times story published Thursday in which six women accused him of sexually harassing and groping them.

The crowd of Schwarzenegger supporters interrupted him with cheers.

Schwarzenegger said: "Yes, it is true that I was on rowdy movie sets and I have done things that were not right which I thought then was playful but now I recognize that I offended people."

On edit: In fact, is there anyone here who didn't realize THEN (in your 20s) that this was offensive, unacceptable behavior?

I'll bet sometimes when he says "how'd you like me to stick my tongue in your asshole" a lot of women blush and get all excited and say "okay!"

I worked with an actor once who had worked with a very famous actor who wasn't Arnold. He said this guy, although married and with children, would be surrounded by women every night they would go out to dinner. He would pick a woman out and say "you know, I'm married, I have kids, and nothing's ever gonna change that. But how 'bout you and I go out into the parking lot right now and have sex?" And the women would almost always say yes and go with him.

It's fucked up.

63. No means "conqueror"
he will set records in the number of women he "conquers" as well as a record in the number of women he harasses. Voters can no longer be in denial. These incidents described are gross. They span decades. You don't turn off that attitude towards women (that they are meat) just because you 'need' to. Were that the case Maria would have threatened to leave and he would have 'quit', before.

...this is gonna cause his numbers to go UP. This WILL be seen as rowdy, boys will be boys behavior. It may be boorish and offensive to many, but its not gonna cost him the election. And this last minute attempt at a smear job is gonna backfire, and I predict actually gain him votes - as similar smears did with Clinton. The story about the loan for his campaign had more potential to be damaging.

This is not the family-oriented, church-going, morally upright values by which conservative Republicans define themselves. Arnold's behavior was truly disgusting, even by libertine standards. If he loses votes to McClintock, Davis or Bustamante may have a chance.

...camp. I can't imagine any of them being for Arnold now, knowing where he stands on the issues: pro-choice, gay rights, etc,... And I think you underestimate their potential to vote strategically, and respond negatively to political smears just like most other people do. All I can say is how it makes me feel, and it seems politically motivated, and although improper, not that serious. I'm betting thats the way most other people feel as well.

110. Why does "politically motivated" make it invalid?
Of course, everything is politically motivated in one way or another. That doesn't make it any less true or reflect any better on the crudeness of the character of the person who treats women in such a way. Arnold is a megalomanical opportunist whose only interest in politics is as an expression of his will to power. This is not the kind of person anyone could look up to as a leader able to unite a largely Democratic state like California. If he's elected, the trouble will only just begin.

I believe you're wrong. Most people, especially women, see the difference between this and a consensual affair.

Besides, even if you're right, isn't an admission of sexual assault grounds for.... a recall?!!

And on edit: if this is such a good thing for Aah-nold, why are all the Freepers losing their minds about it?

86. This is not sexual assault.
I don't know all the facts, but from what I've read, 'rowdy' does seem to me to be an appropriate description. When actual assault or harrassment occurs, they should be prosecuted. This behavior doesnt come anywhere near those crimes.

Freepers see things through a political prism just as many here do. This keeps people from responding honestly to to charges like this. Ordinary people, not obsessed by politics, see things as they are and not how they may effect their candidates campaign. This is also why both reps and dems misread the Clinton scandal at the outset. The charges are that a some guy was being playfull with the girls and went a little overboard. Not that big a deal.

89. "Playful" with "the girls"?
"Went a little overboard"?

Boys will be boys, right?

Sheesh.

A DU article from a few days ago says it best:

"Some people initially wondered why a supposedly socially liberal guy like Arnold decided to run as a Republican. The answer is pretty clear now. If Schwarzenegger, with his background and world view, had run as a Democrat, the very same media who is currently supporting and praising him shamelessly would have destroyed him. A Democrat accused of just about any unsaintly behavior, real or imagined, is front page news. However, if you fall in with the 'right' crowd, everything can be overlooked."

103. Sexual Harassment Primer
let's review behavior in the workplace:

http://www.eeoc.gov/facts/fs-sex.html

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Facts About Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to or rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment.

Sexual harassment can occur in a variety of circumstances, including but not limited to the following:

The victim as well as the harasser may be a woman or a man. The victim does not have to be of the opposite sex.
The harasser can be the victim's supervisor, an agent of the employer, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or a non-employee.
The victim does not have to be the person harassed but could be anyone affected by the offensive conduct.
Unlawful sexual harassment may occur without economic injury to or discharge of the victim.
The harasser's conduct must be unwelcome.
It is helpful for the victim to directly inform the harasser that the conduct is unwelcome and must stop. The victim should use any employer complaint mechanism or grievance system available.

When investigating allegations of sexual harassment, EEOC looks at the whole record: the circumstances, such as the nature of the sexual advances, and the context in which the alleged incidents occurred. A determination on the allegations is made from the facts on a case-by-case basis.

Prevention is the best tool to eliminate sexual harassment in the workplace. Employers are encouraged to take steps necessary to prevent sexual harassment from occurring. They should clearly communicate to employees that sexual harassment will not be tolerated. They can do so by establishing an effective complaint or grievance process and taking immediate and appropriate action when an employee complains.

More:
http://www.de.psu.edu/harassment/whatif/

Sexual harassment is a legal concept developed originally to address a particular type of sexual discrimination. Briefly, sexual harassment is unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature that makes someone feel uncomfortable or unwelcome in the workplace by focusing attention on their gender instead of on their professional qualifications. The concept applies now to both women and men, to adults and to children.

Sexual harassment is usually defined as behavior by someone higher in status or power toward someone lower in status or power, although harassment by peers or customers is also recognized as a problem. The unequal balance of power is an intrinsic element of the legal definition of sexual harassment.

The EEOC requires all organizations with more than 15 employees to develop a sexual harassment policy, to make that policy public, and train employees in issues of sexual harassment. If you're not sure whether or not you're being harassed, talk to someone in the human resources department of your organization.

Most states also have sexual harassment laws.

According to the women, the alleged incidents happened over the span of three decades. The latest being three years ago.

77. awww, it's ok
I just heard some actress on "The View" (according to the schedule, her name is Samantha Harris, I think -- didn't recognize her at all) say she was walking in a Cali. park recently, and she saw Ah-nuld and Anorexic Maria and their kids all riding horses and spending quality time together, and she concluded that it doesn't matter how many Hollywood boobs and butts he's grabbed, he's a "real family man" and is trying to put it all behind him. And besides, she really likes what he stands for, so she's still gonna vote for him.

VOOOOMIT!

This is why this brainless cretin is ahead in the polls. He's a movie star. And 60 percent of the Cali. electorate refuses to listen or THINK about who to vote for. We have no idea what he DOES stand for (except hypocrisy -- "I harrass women, but I'll stand for women's issues! Vote for me!")

GOD! What am I MISSING here? Why should Gray Davis even have to WORRY about this musclebound ape?

http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/sf.gate/news;sect=news__art_topban;zip=;kw=POL;width=468;height=60;sz=468x60;ord=94595?

Reaction to the apology was swift, with some of the actor's critics complaining that it was too little too late and some supporters saying they respected him for acknowledging past mistakes.

"All is not forgiven. He's got a pattern of this for 30 years, it just doesn't just go away," said Karen Pomer, a spokeswoman for the women's group CodePink.

"When you grab a woman's breast or rear when they don't want you to, that is sexual battery in the state of California," Pomer said.

Julie Vandermost, president of the California Women's Leadership Association, an Orange County-based Republican group that has endorsed Schwarzenegger, said she was not troubled by his remarks.

"I'm happy he's coming out, apologizing and being truthful, but it doesn't mean he shouldn't be governor," Vandermost said. "I'm madder at Gray Davis for tripling my car tax."

The president of the California National Organization for Women, Megan Seely, attending a news conference celebrating Gov. Gray Davis's signing of a package of women's health care bills Thursday, said "It's clear Schwarzenegger is not safe for women."

Uh, yeah, right....shows you the bottom line prioty of the GOP.
