Rumsfeld teased Belgian minister over jail (Threatened to jail him in US)

BRUSSELS, Belgium (Reuters)

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld threatened his Belgian colleague with jail if he ever came to the United States during a row the two countries were having over a disputed Belgian war crimes law. ---

"When I asked him during our bilateral meeting whether it was still safe for me to come to Colorado Springs, Rumsfeld said: 'I will put you in jail'," one newspaper quoted Defense Minister Andre Flahaut Thursday as saying.

A spokesman for Flahaut confirmed the remark was made, saying it was meant as a joke.

U.S. Ambassador to NATO Nicholas Burns said earlier this week that relations with Belgium were on the mend after their spat over a war crimes law which brought suits against President Bush and other administration officials. ---
