Partial Bith Abortion Banned by House of Rep.

WASHINGTON - The House voted Thursday to ban a type of abortion that for years has been at the center of the debate over a woman's reproductive rights. President Bush (news - web sites) has promised to sign the bill into law and opponents say they will immediately challenge it in court.

The bill, passed 281-142, could be taken up by the Senate as early as Friday. Bush's signature would make it the first federal law since Roe v. Wade (news - web sites) in 1973 to restrict a specific abortion procedure.

The drive to stop partial birth abortion "will finally become law and the performance of this barbaric procedure will finally come to an end," said House Judiciary Committee (news - web sites) Chairman James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis.

"This will be an important step toward building a culture of life in America," said White House press secretary Scott McClellan, who praised the House and urged the Senate "to move quickly on this important piece of legislation as well."

I am proud of all the CA rep's that voted no on the bill.

1. I knew my Dem Congressman would support this

He disappoints me when he votes this way (Michaud). His anti-abortion views make him a target. It's why I didn't support him in the primary last year.

Roe v. Wade is next. The day after George gets Re-selected.

Next will be parental notification.

It will be another attempt at a wedge issue just like partial birth abortion.

And just like partial birth abortion, many Democrats will vote for it too.

5. The reason is

Many Dems are not overly extreme on these topics. Most of us support freedom of choice, but all freedoms have their limits. Partial birth and parental notification both strike a chord with many.

For all of you people who like the Roe v Wade decision, a portion of the majority opinion that is relevant to the partial birth abortion situation:

"With respect to the State's important and legitimate interest in potential life, the 'compelling' point is at viability. This is so because the fetus then presumably has the capability of meaningful life outside the mother's womb. State regulation protective of fetal life after viability thus has both logical and biological justifications. If the State is interested in protecting fetal life after viability, it may go so far as to proscribe abortion during that period, except when it is necessary to preserve the life or health of the mother."

Like murder, kidnapping, rape, etc.

Should the government stop prohibiting these actions?
