Faux News | Graham Drops Out of Presidential Race
Edited on Thu Oct-02-03 06:44 PM by goobergunch
Thursday, October 02, 2003

WASHINGTON — Democrat Bob Graham (search) will hold a news conference Friday to announce that he will be dropping out of the presidential race.

Graham's campaign only has $1 million cash on hand, causing a dire financial situation and the spokesman for Graham's presidential campaign resigned Thursday as his staff considered how to save his lagging candidacy.

Jamal Simmons told Graham and his wife, Adele, that he was leaving as the candidate prepared to meet with his advisers at his Miami Lakes, Fla., headquarters to discuss the campaign's future.

As he left the meeting, Graham said his advisers presented alternatives for the campaign but no decision had been made.

Thank you tjdee for the link.

And yes, this is a dupe of a GD and a P/C thread. Feel free to lock. However, I thought that DU's LBN should register an event of this importance.

3. Hate to Hear This.
Senator Graham brings so much to the debate and I hate to see him drop out, if this is true. I hope he sticks it out, but I don't want to lose him in the Senate either. We need him.

4. Was wondering when this was going to happen
I truly feel that Edwards has been promised a VP slot (thus putting his whole career on the line). Prior to that, I think the selection belonged to Graham. I thought this announcement might come soon.

6. This probably helps Edwards and Lieberman the most
The Edwards people are probably thinking that if Clark flames out (and right now it's too early to tell), he'll be able to run as the Southern candidate during the primaries.

Lieberman is probably breathing a sight of relief. For one thing, his fundraising totals for the third quarter no longer look so bad. Plus, he can now tap into Graham's fundraising network, many of whom had been leaning towards Lieberman before Graham got into the race.

7. good for him
It's never easy to pull out of a race, but he's needed in Florida and that 1 million dollars will certainly come in handy for his reelection.
For the Party, that's one less vulnerable senate seat to worry about.
If we take back the Senate, he should get something nice for this. He'll already be the chairman of the Intelligence committee, so I say the Senate steering committee should give him a bigger office in the Russell building.

13. Funny how someone can donate to a Presidential campaign
and end up donating to a Senatorial campaign. I know the rules allow it but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

17% of all contributions. Better not to talk about it. There's big ears around here.

14. Ever think maybe 'his job is done now .....'.... remember....
Graham was one of the first and loudest and most consistant critics of the Bush war hype and all attendant issues. Running for pres. gave him an incrdible amount of free press that he used with much focus to laser in on the issues that are now exploding <finally> in the media. I think he came in with a strategic purpose - and god bless him, he did a great job. Next....

16. Second that
I hope he does run for re-election to the Senate. He's a good and honest man and we still need him in Government.

As if Bob or some of his staff were reading this:

Thank you Senator. You have my admiration and respect.
