BBC: Half-Life 2 code leaked online
Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 05:06 PM by Skinner
Half-Life 2 code leaked online

The makers of the eagerly awaited Half-Life 2
have appealed for help to track down who leaked
the source code of the game on the internet.
The software is not the full game but contains
core information about it.

Valve, the makers of Half-Life 2, said the leak
followed a concerted hacking effort on the
company's computers over a number of months.

The source code lies at the heart of a game and
is kept a closely guarded secret to stop other
people copying it.

Half-Life 2 is the sequel to one of the most
widely acclaimed games of all time. The original
garnered numerous awards for its strong plot,
complex puzzles and the intelligence of the enemies
in the game.

This makes me pissed, not because of the millions of dollars that are at stake here, but the hard work (5yrs!!) the developpers have put into this game wich was set to revolutionize the gaming industry...

9. I find that incredibly offensive
"1. probably some Open Source (tm) zealot.

(thinks all software should be Free as in Beer)"

It sounds to me like you have a problem with Open Source software and have decided to demonise it by associating it with an illegal act. I expect that kind of thing on Free Republic but not here.

Would you like to explain what your problem with Open Source software is?

13. No problem with O.S.S. just zealots who think all software must be O.S.S.
so maybe I should rephrase my comment from:

"1. probably some Open Source (tm) zealot.

(thinks all software should be Free as in Beer)"

to

"2. probably some Open Source (tm) activist.

(thinks all software should be Free as in Beer)"

EDIT: made sentence clearer.

or indeed at all.

5. i love Valve, I love Half Life
wouldnt they have inevitably made it open source in order for outside developers to create mods (a la Counterstrike)? Why would this set back development of the game? Damn it, I cant wait for Half Life II to come out. For all of you who havent played the single player Half Life (yes, you old people too) you are missing out what is considered to be the first masterpiece of the relatively new art that is the video game.

6. Anyone who plays Counter-Strike knows about the rampant cheating
Edited on Fri Oct-03-03 12:33 PM by shpongled
I suppose this would just make it that much easier for on-line gamers to cheat.

8. that's true
the CS cheating was a big problem, that's probably why they're concerned. I don't see the cheating as something that would affect their bottom line at all. Then again I didnt just spend 5 years cranking out code that somebody just stole and distributed. I'd probably go apeshit.

18. There is a difference
between publishing a SDK (code a developer can use to hook into the engine) and the actual game code.

I feel very sorry for valve, they must be really upset I know I would be.

7. In fact, everyone should see if Bill Gates has to give 'em a 'puter"
from www.grc.com

FREE PC Anyone?
1.1 Billion Dollar Anti-Trust Settlement
May Entitle You to Receive a Free PC
The folks from Lindows.com have created an interesting web site (which Microsoft has formally and legally "objected to". Lindows.com chairman, Robert Rosenfeld, responded to Microsoft's note with a letter back to Bill Gates. Richard Smith's security and privacy site provides the full text of the original complaint against Microsoft, and this Reuters story provides some additional background.

MSFreePC.com FAQ Page

Not being attorneys, we can offer no opinion about the content of the MSFreePC.com web site, nor the merits of Microsoft's complaints about it. However, it does seem that if Microsoft has agreed to give away $1.1 Billion in computers and software — which they do not deny — you may want to spend a moment to determine whether you might qualify to receive a piece of that action.

In any event, we thought you'd want to know about it.

Unfortunately for American Companies outsourcing in overseas

National Security and just general security risks are of utmost importance .....and Microsoft has made us very vulnerable to attack

11. I CAN'T WAIT!!
I really want to play this game sooo bad.

I heard that Call Of Duty will be better, but after playing the demo for a while, I have to disagree. HL1 was so scary, it really put you in the action.

COD seemed like a target shoot at a circus. The way you just hide and take shots at the enemy when they pop out from around the corner.

COD will be good, but HL2 is the promised land.
