Davis Busy Filling Vacancies and Judgeships Just in Case
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 3 — Gov. Gray Davis has made more than 260 appointments to judgeships and state commissions since the California recall election was announced 10 weeks ago, part of a concerted effort to secure a lasting Democratic imprint on Sacramento should the Republican candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger win on Tuesday.

"The number of appointments in the past month has shattered all records," said Steve Maviglio, Mr. Davis's press secretary. "There are five or six on my desk every day. There used to be five or six a week."

Because many of the appointments require confirmation by the Democratic-controlled State Senate, which is not in session, a move is afoot to call a special session. The Senate sergeant at arms this week did a survey of the Senate's 40 members and determined that enough of them would be available early next week to establish a quorum.

"We are waiting to see what will happen next," said Debbie Manning, deputy chief sergeant at arms.

With Mr. Schwarzenegger, the clear leader in public opinion polls, promising to "clean house" in Sacramento, no vacant board or commission seat seems too insignificant for the Davis camp to fill. In a fight for his political life, the governor this week named a new member to the county fair board in Santa Cruz.

1. Go Davis!
Don't believe the bullshit Arnold is saying, if he steals this, he will start appointing right wing anti-choice, pro-Bush judges as soon as he can.

Davis is doing the right thing for the Democratic Party by getting as much done as fast as possible.

All you Davis bashers take note.

2. Bless his foresighted heart. I hope he doesn't get recalled...
But if he does it will come back to bite them just like bush is getting Big bites out of him Now and will continue to do so.

3. Fix the voting booths, too! Get rid of the DREs!
I'm hoping against all odds that you guys out in California beat this thing. Turn out is the key!

4. Here's a plan...
Davis can do his mega-appointments and the state legislature will go along to thwart Arnold.

Then, the day before the election, Davis resigns as governor.

Since the ballot states: "Should Gray Davis be recalled as governor?" His resignation makes the point moot. The issue no longer exists.

Under California law, Bustamante becomes governor.

And Arnold can go back to groping girls and worshipping Hitler.

It won't happen (too simple and practical), but it's fun to fantasize.

5. Interesting concept
Is it feasable? If so, it would certainly bust up a lot of Repub aspirations and keep the state clean from Arnold the creep.

6. Unfortunately once the recall was certified,
to my understanding, it goes forward even if the subject of the recall resigns. So he resigns and Bustamante is only governor for a day or so until the recall - then the winner of the 'plurality' (even if the most votes by anyone is 10%), is the winner.

11. Sorry, but that won't fly.
If Davis resigns the recall still goes forward as does the selection (I will not call selection by a minority of the voters an election) goes forward. This has all been hashed out before.

10. There's something to be said for good old fashioned machine politics
Good. It's all about the accomplishments; that's something the Republicans never forget.
