2003 Election
Election on Nov. 4 in doubt, official says
By John Fritze
October 4, 2003A lawsuit involving Marion County's ballot turned into a court battle Friday over whether the issue can be resolved in time for the Nov. 4 election.
County Clerk Doris Anne Sadler, a Republican, told Senior Judge James E. Harris she didn't know whether her office could conduct an election on time if a new ballot design were accepted next week.

In the lawsuit, four Democratic City-County Council candidates argue that the 2004 ballot is illegal because it groups candidates by office rather than by party. Republicans counter that the law allows election officials leeway in ballot design.

It would be the first time this ballot has been used by all voters in Marion County because it is part of an $11.1 million electronic scan card voting system, which was bought last year.
