Indian Immigrant's Son Wins La. Primary
NEW ORLEANS - An Indian immigrants' son running as a conservative Republican finished first in an open primary for Louisiana governor Saturday, leaving three veteran Democratic politicians scrambling for the second spot in a runoff.

With 47 percent of the precincts reporting, Bobby Jindal had 35 percent, or 231,901 votes. It was a close contest for the second spot between Lt. Gov. Kathleen Blanco and Attorney General Richard Ieyoub both at 17 percent, and former Congressman Claude "Buddy" Leach with 14 percent. Former state Senate President Randy Ewing was fifth with 9 percent. Blanco and Ieyoub had 116,757 and 114,821 votes, respectively

3. No need to freak out yet
Whichever Dem gets in the run-off will be favored...so says my friend and next-door-neighbor (he's the political analyst on the local news here in Baton Rouge). But indeed Jindal ran an execrable series of radio ads for dittoheads--Guns, Ten Commandments, *'s "bedrock values," etc.

26. The dem votes are split by three
Very much like the Dems out here in CA, LA needs to get its people out to vote.

19. WAIT! The total dems votes are much more than Jindle...I am in
Louisiana and when you add up all the Dems in the primary the total is more than enough to defeat Jindle in the final race. Blanco is a very strong candidate. She is an Acadian and all of Southwest La. and much of the entire parishes lining the Mississippi River will vote for her. We will defeat that ultra conservative Repuke Jindle.
Also we won with Mitch Landrieu for Lt. Gov. and he is the brother of Mary Landrieu, state Senator.
We will beat Jindle.

2. Jindal worries me.
I hope Blanco pulls this one out for the 2nd spot because I think she will make a much better candidate against Jindal.

4. populist Leach is running 4th- the increase oil company tax is not selling
The odd man out was Leach, whose Huey Long-style populist campaign was based on promises to tax big oil companies and raise the minimum wage.

5. Leach has fared well
Only 5% points out of a run-off spot...probably too little too late though. The four top dems split the vote--but taken together they're around 60%. They will unite to defeat Jindal. Gotta love Leach, whose main platform issue is giving the poor a pay raise.

Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 10:44 PM by Rowdyboy
She's only a couple of thousand votes ahead with half the vote uncounted. Hell, it's Louisana, anything can happen!

20. Its over. Blanco is now the Dem runner. Leach is great and he would
probably have won if he had not had so many Dems from his terrority in the race. He was the one I wanted to win. I will, of course, vote for Blanco against that fruit loop jindle, but Leach is a REAL democrat. Blanco is a little too conservative for very liberal me.

28. my thoughts exactly!!
.....Buddy says it like it needs to be said....and I had more confidence in him than any of the others as far as doing what he said he would do....WHICH WAS SO MUCH MORE THAN ANY OF THE OTHERS!!! If it's true about Breaux not running again I hope Buddy Leach will run for his seat...as I stated elsewhere he'd most definitely get my vote AGAIN!!!! As much as I loathe Blanco...I'll vote for her but I won't like it one damn bit! x(

9. Question regarding "Good Ole Boy"
My mother-in-law asked me who I voted for and when I said Leach, she said: "oh, you voted for the good ole boy network". Any insight?

She voted for Hunt Downer, btw.

...obviously she isn't much informed either...as it sure seems like Jindal is even more the "good ol'boy"..seeing how he's only 32 and is the HEAD OF THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM and with all is other his other *merits*:eyes:

12. thoughts from another yankee
i'm a yankee (actually, Westerner) too...but have been here since '89. Her comments probably reflect that fact that Leach resembles Earl and Huey Long...There's a hint of political shadiness (indicted but acquitted for vote buying in '78), but on the other hand his advocacy for the poor is real. The populist good ole boy network is better that the Bush-style fat cat network.

11. Where did he represent?
Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 11:10 PM by NewJerseyDem
Since Breaux is probably retiring, Chris John will probably run for senate. Could he run for that open congressional seat in southwest Louisiana or is he from somewhere else? The seat leans republican but he could at least try.

Maybe he'll run for Senate or, of course, he could try to return to the legislature.

15. Jindall will be the new
GOP minority poster boy. Bet on that. Unlike Powell, he's not even all that moderate...So I'm sure they'll parade him around and keep him in the front at the convention like they did with Powell, Rice, and Watt at the '00 convention. Minority outreach, my ass...Look at the audience, almost all white. Who was it tha said the GOP convention is like a Utah Jazz game -- all the bleachers are white, but the star players are black...

That's if he wins of course. Otherwise, they'll toss him to the side...

22. The total votes for Democrats are more than what Jindle got
I don't think he has a chance. Also I know Repukes who votes for Blanco because she is a real Louisiana citizen...an Acadian who understands our culture. I voted for Leach but will support Blanco because she is a democrat.

16. History may not be on Jindal's side
Consider these two examples.

1986: W Henson Moore comes ahead in the first round against John Breaux. Breaux goes on to win 53-47%.

1996: Woody Jenkins comes out ahead in the firt round against Mary Landrieu. Landrieu goes on to win by 5,000 votes.

So while Jindal may have won the battle he may very well lose the war

18. converted to christianity
sounds like some right wing asshole who kisses up to right wing ass for acceptance. i'm sure his converting to christianity is something the judge moore types love so they can use him to convert the others. can't se ehim winning though. louisiana has a populist culture that if dems tap into should be able to win.

23. There were 4 Democrats and 2 Repukes, 1 repuke only got about
120 votes or some absurd amount. So the total votes of the dems were way ahead of the repuklican. In La. most Dems who bother to vote dem in a primary go on to vote dem.
