Clark Raises More Than $3.5M in Two Weeks

"WASHINGTON (AP) - Wesley Clark raised more than $3.5 million in the first two weeks of his presidential race, beating some of his Democratic rivals who have been campaigning for months.

Roughly two-thirds of Clark's money was raised over the Internet, campaign spokeswoman Kym Spell said.

Clark received donations from 21,000 people, with contributions averaging $167."

Average of $14,727,000 through About 189,000 Donations, is about $78 a pop, and Clark is two and half times that much? Humm...

While this is nothing like *'s fundieraising, Clark, with comparision to the other candidates, IS, in some ways the Big Money guy. Sarcasm, sure, but to some degree, seriously considering the field, he IS Big Money. $167 average is a pretty high number for a primary.

Absolutely amazing. Had you said a year ago he could have raised the amount of money he has, I would have laughed in your face. He has really been impressive in regards to raising money. Its good to see people willing to put their money where their heart is. Especially considering that many of Dean's supporters are young, some even college age, who don't have much to give. That takes a candidate who highly motivates his base and Dean has CERTAINLY done that.

Just wait until Clark or Dean gets the nod! Then the bucks will start flowing in! I'm holding back on donations until I see one of those two win the nod and then my "big guns" (about $100-200, hey, I'm unemployed and quite young) are coming out in support. Hopefully, there's many more like me, just waiting to make their big contribution once the nod is announced.

why the donation count was 23K, but the donar count is 21k. The 21K number doesn't consider donars who gave more than once like myself and lots of others.

I am getting the impression that Clark, like Dean, is going to be a cash magnet, and will be able to be competative (cash-wise) in the general versus Bush.

AND, let's all keep in mind, that in the last quarter, the combined fund-raising of the dems BEAT Bush. Keep it up kids, and we'll not only beat Bush in cash, but beat him at the ballot-box!

Simon Rosenberg, who heads the centrist New Democrat Network, put the Dean bounty in perspective by noting that in a 10-candidate field the former Vermont governor was able to raise 50 percent more than Bill Clinton raised in the best quarter of his 1996 re-election effort. Rosenberg called Dean’s feat “almost miraculous” and added, “We have to recognize that the Dean campaign is the best-run campaign we’ve ever seen.”

Taking the party-wide view, Rosenberg pointed to what almost no one else has noticed: Based on the preliminary estimates for the third quarter, the 10-person Democratic field collectively will have outraised the Bush campaign, an indication of how fired up Democratic donors are.

“If Bush is this supposed fund-raising king, then this so-called ‘weak’ Democratic field — to use Karl Rove’s word — is outraising him,” Rosenberg said.

...several days ago. This is the clearest sign sign I've seen that that Chimp is going down. I wish one of them((D)candidates)) would mention that $100 to them will probably mean a $1000 to thier 401K. The market runs on *'s bad polling numbers, and will rocket if the rest of the world figures out that we've emerged from our collective delusion.

You know, though, the more I think about it, it's been a while since political pundits referred to our field as weak, hasn't it? In fact, ever since Clark entered the race, the news outlets seem even more anxious to propel both him and Dean to the top of the pack, and have even started implying that these two guys (at the least) pose a serious risk to Bush's reelection chances.

I predict that Dean will not have another quarter this good. Why? As supporters begin to condider the polls matching our candidates against shrub, they will see that Dean does worse than the other top tier candidates and begin to shift some of their contributions to the candidates who are polling better. Momentum carried Dean to this high level of constributions. Dean's momentum seems to have stalled with the entry of Clark.

I don't see how any Democrat can compete with the Bush money machine unless the Democratic nominee decides to forsake the federal matching funds and tries to match Bush dollar for dollar. This is becoming increasingly obvious to many of us that had been proponents of election reform in the past.

The ability of a candidate like Clark to raise vast sums of money is a critical requirement to be able to beat Bush in 2004.

We cannot let the other side beat us on the money chase, as distasful as that may sound to some of us purists.

and we both know its paramount if we want to win, but after a certain point, money becomes irrelevant. I've seen many candidates outspent 2-1 and still win (okay, maybe only a few, but the point is, it happens).
