Security Council meets on Israeli attack in Syria
Sunday, October 5, 2003 Posted: 5:57 PM EDT (2157 GMT)

Israeli ambassador Dan Gillerman, left, answered charges from Syrian ambassador Fayssal Mekdad at an emergency session of the Security Council Sunday.

(CNN) -- Syria on Sunday called for the U.N. Security Council to condemn Israel's airstrike against what Israel called a terrorist training camp inside Syrian territory. Israel said it acted in self-defense after a suicide bombing that killed 19 people.

Syria, an elected member of the Security Council, requested a special meeting Sunday and asked the council to strongly condemn the attack.

Syrian U.N. Ambassador Fayssal Mekdad called the raid an act of "unwarranted aggression" that violated the U.N. charter and the 1974 disengagement agreement that followed the 1973 Mideast war.

He said Syria has exercised "maximum self-restraint," but he accused Israel of trying "to export its current domestic crisis to the entire region."

1. Where are the weapons of human destruction, Israel?
You've lost your credibility with some.

Let's hear your case for striking?

3. No.....I will still hold out hope for UN..just because it's obvious how
necessary it is in "these times."

But......I worry and fear that you may be correct. I just have to hope that UN will be like the giant PHOENIX and will rise up from the ASHES of DESTRUCTION by BUSH/SHARON......and take flight in the hearts of all of us!

I have to hope that..because the alternative is so dreadful. :-( :nuke:

22. I totally agree, KoKo.....
and luckily, I don't think people in the UK will allow the Poodle to ignore the importance of the U.N. He may come out and support Israel, verbally, over shrubbie's 'war on terra', but if he doesn't vote to condemn Sharon's attack on Syria, the noose around his neck will only tighten.

It's getting far too intense for my comfort level.

And if they are escorted out by security guards and put on a plane to the Hague, I will have hope without thinking twice!

7. I must respectfully disagree.
Israel has long put up with arms coming in from Egypt and from Lebanon. If they are coming from Lebanon, they are coming through Syria. In addition, don't think for a moment Israel is not capable of getting legit intel on its neighbors. Third, money has consistently been flowing from the Saudis through Syria and Lebanon to the Palestinians. Last, seems to me we blew the shit out of not one, but two countries, one of which for a hell of a lot less than Israel has put up with.

Later,
JM

11. Before calling Syria an 'evildoer,' you might want to
consider the status of the Golan Heights, which Israel has been occupying, and refusing to return to Syria, for 36 years now. I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere here, yet it is the chief cause of friction between Israel and Syria. The situation is more complex than some here are portraying it.

12. I seem to remember a rather fascinating performance by
none other than Colin Powell, including satellite photos, audio tapes, and the like which 'proved' that the Iraqis had weapons of mass destruction. Israel has less credibility than Powell does.

and that was from my local GE/NBC propaganda outlet.

This kind of evidence isn't too hard to manufacture.

ridding the world of weapons of mass destruction is something else.

16. TahitiNut locked thread said was a duplicate - related yes duplicate no
check for urselves

"United Nations — Syria demanded the UN Security Council condemn an Israeli air raid on a purported Palestinian training base near Damascus on Sunday. Israel's ambassador defended the attack, saying Syria was harbouring terrorists.

Diplomats from the two countries spoke at an emergency meeting of the council, called at Syria's request. Syrian Ambassador Fayssal Mekdad called on the council to adopt a resolution condemning the attack as "military aggression"

<snip>

"Syria is not incapable of creating a resisting and deterring balance," the letter said.

The United States appealed for restraint on all sides, but accused Syria of harbouring Islamic Jihad and other terror groups. Mr. Gillerman said he did not expect the United States to support Syria's resolution.

France, a permanent Security Council member, criticized the bombing as an "unacceptable violation" of both international law and rules of sovereignty"

USA creating "peace" ??

I don't think so

Just my Humble Canuk Opinion -

18. The ultimate DU joke...
is that there is a faction of DU that does not
recognize that Sharon and his hegemonic
ambitions in the ME are one in the same with the
PNAC cabal...
Is that not ironic?
They will ultimately defend this action over in the FA...
They have or perhaps have not understood that the
military actions of Israel are but a micro-movie of the
Bush administration.
How strange that they say they oppose the Bush cabal
and yet support Sharon....as if there were a difference?

19. I sincerely hope
you are not referring to my post, BeHereNow.

I do not support Bush, and I do not support Sharon. The interesting thing here, though is if you look at the facts of this incident. Funny, your argument smacks of much we all have a hatred for with the Bush Administration. You disagree, you are a traitor.

As I stated in my post, this action represents attacking the source as opposed to taking out Palestinian homes. Which would you rather have? Second, Syria took this to the UN, but Israel had already shown the weaponry. Syria is protesting the action, but if it had been a Syrian base or other Syrian owned installation, they would have been screaming like hell and would be at war already. I think Syria's actions bely the fact that the Israelis found and destroyed something the Syrians do not want to admit to, especially in the face of U.S. pressure over the same issue.

Later,
JM

21. so the country with the biggest advantage militarilyy,
bombs inside another country's borders at will-on a "suspicion"-and if they "find something" then it is justified? Isn't that what Bush just did in Iraq? Well, Bush did go a little further and lied, but he is still maintaining it was justified because they are "hiding something"

There is no law left in the ME--leaders like Sharon are shaping barbaric law to suit their biblical mandate to return Israel to it's biblical boundaries. There is no law left at all, it seems, but the crass, raw law of the jungle--in this case, Sharon is a monster predator.

......But Syria will do! I knew that PNAC was targeting one of these
countries bordering Israel. We will invade them and take the border
land to broker settlements for peace. This will all transpire right
before the election. We'll see..........
