MOSCOW, Oct. 5 — President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia says the United States now faces in Iraq the possibility of a prolonged, violent and ultimately futile war like the one that mired the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

In an expansive interview on Saturday evening, Mr. Putin warned that Iraq could "become a new center, a new magnet for all destructive elements." He added, without naming them, that "a great number of members of different terrorist organizations" have been drawn into the country since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

To respond to this emerging threat, he said, the Bush administration must move quickly to restore sovereignty to Iraqis and to secure a new United Nations resolution that would clearly define how long international forces remain there.

"How would the local population treat forces whose official name is the occupying forces?" he asked, suggesting that further hostility to the United States was inevitable unless its occupation received the international legitimacy it now lacks.

I will not give Drudge a hitcount - so this is what I found - doesn't say much though...

said that it will pre-emptively strike any country that threatens its national interests. That may be what Drudge will expand on.

18. IMHO.. Israel is doing what Russia wants.
As is the US.
Mideast turmoil will keep mideast oil production down and prices high. Who just signed a deal to sell us oil? That's right if you picked Russia. High market prices for oil are not a bad thing for a nation with vast oil resources. Viva La Capatolism!

Mideast turmiol will also insure that Russia has mideast states looking for deals on arms to help offset the threat from Israel and the U.S. Again Threat=Money for Russia. Again, capitolism at work.

The more nationa isolated and outright pissed on by the US are more nations that are looking for friends with muscle, military and diplomatic. Not to mention available for Russian trade.

It serves russian interests to bluster and console, but not to risk any assets. Nothing to lose for Russia and everything to gain... Handed to them on a silver platter by the actions of this administration

Remember the cold war? It's not over, It's Back, and the Russians just changed tactics and goals and learned how to win at it with the shrub's help.

19. Not likely to be Israel
Russia's various announcements have mentioned areas of interest, specifically Afghanistan, Iraq, and a vague reference to unspecified threats on Russia's borders. Israel is not involved in any of these areas. Rather, Russia appears to be threatening the United States although it is unclear to what end.

24. When I mentioned Israel, my thinking was along the lines
of the US giving the go-ahead for Israel to strike inside of Syria. It was my thinking that Putin was threatening both the US and Israel.

Israel can't affect Russian national interests. BushCo's power play in Russia/China/Europes's sphere of influence will NEVER lead to profit.

7. Escalating depopulation operations as theatre widens to Syria, Iran

More aggressive anti-personnel operations will significantly reduce the number of troops needed to secure natural resources and armaments throughout the region.

Israel has a sizeable force for deployment, and is experienced in liquidating hostile populations.

22. But that will never silence them. Don't you get it?
The logic of oppression does not hold. It never has.

2,000 years ago, after a Roman occupation of Jerusalem for nearly 300 years, the Jews built their entire society and religion around the hope of throwing off Roman oppression.

Today, with easy and deadly firepower available to any populace that seeks them, the situation is even worse.

Believe me, I spent 18 months in combat in Vietnam. Those people did not want us there. Even the ones who opposed the guerrillas.

An occupying force--particularly one crippled by the inability to perceive and communicate--cannot help but be a brutal and unwelcome imposition on the subject peoples.

30. I did not say that the policy is either sound or in your best interest

In my opinion, deploying Israeli troops to slaughter Muslims will not increase the security and safety of either ordinary Americans or ordinary Israelis.

However, I do not think that the safety of ordinary people is a high priority for those who are motivated by short term profit.

21. Are you still peddling this line?
Come on! Everybody's army is capable of "depopulating". That's what they're made for.

You state a formula for regional control that is wholly inaccurate. There is no method of "depopulation" acceptable to the civilized world that can suppress indefinitely the legitimate determination of a people to assert their own national/ethnic identity at the expense of the occupier.

Israel is even now contemplating calling up 50,000 reservists. The US must soon face the same inevitable move.

We can not deal with Iraq. Surely Syria will be no better. Iran? Not on your life. What else? Chechnya? Take a look around. Being a superpower does not anoint a nation with a magic wand to bend occupied nations to their occupiers' wishes.

8. It means that someone who is much better at playing the game than the
current bunch of short-sighted thugs in the Bush Administration has given them a warning that they can't ignore. I doubt that they counted on this when they launced their little "pre-emptive" war. Putin might put on a good facade, but to me, he looks colder than death. I bet little Georgie found a camel's head in his bed last night.

9. Putin: "we were approached by people"
The following remark from Putin bowled me over when I read it this week, yet it seems that next to zero has been made of it:

" I have never said this in public, I'm going to do it today. When counterterrorist operation began in Afghanistan, we were approached by people, through several channels, we were approached by people who intended to fight against Americans in Afghanistan. And if by that time President Bush and I had not formed appropriate relationship, as we have, so no one knows what turn would the developments in Afghanistan had taken."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/09/20030927-2.html

Matt Bivens speculated on what he might have meant in the Moscow Times:

http://www.themoscowtimes.com/stories/2003/09/29/007.html

but yeah, a horses head probably isn't too far from the truth.

15. Interesting times
Edited on Sun Oct-05-03 10:33 PM by Resistance Is Futile
Putin has made quite a few statements lately reminding the rest of the world that the Russian bear is not dead. What he has not indicated, however, is just what it is that he wants. It would be nice to think Putin has the relatively high-minded objective of preventing PNAC from remaking the Middle East for Israel, but it may be something as mundane as demanding a cut of the spoils from Iraq and anywhere else the Texas Idiot invades between now and his depature from office.

One thing, though, is certain. Putin has much more practical experience playing realpolitik than the Texas Idiot and all the PNACers put together. Grab the popcorn....and hope it's not popped by a radioactive fireball.

27. What Putin wants is CLEAR
He wants what the USSR always wanted: the complete destruction of the United States - economically, militarily, socially, politically.

The alleged 'end to the cold war' is a farce. Russia simply unloaded all of its dead weight. It kept all the prime resources, much of the means of production (and distribution), and ALL of the big bombs. And most of all, Russia bought itself some TIME to do what China has been doing for years: building their economy and maintaining their military.

The cold war never ended, but the stupid americans still had parades and gave awards and blah blah blah........

Everything is going as to plan.

This is Stalin's wet dream coming true.

The above is about as accurate as the Texas Fascist Party's claims on the threat posed by Iraq. That is to say, it is utterly baseless.

Educate yourself.

33. Interesting theory, but...
If the United States collapses, the entire global economy collapses, as we are the all important buyer of last resort.

So why would Russia want to bring about its own demise? Do you think Putin is that vindictive that he wants the U.S. brought down, even if it means taking the rest of the world (his own country included) along with them?

You are saying that Putin and Russia have a nefarious plot to rule the world moreso then the PNacers. When the reality of the matter is he's capable of far less then the United States in that regard and if this past year is any telling the States isn't capable of all that much when it comes to occupying hostile countries.

Something the U.S. is in painfully short supply of these days. Imagine if Russia were joined by China and India against the United States. Yeah we might be the superpower, but you can't take on EVERYBODY and hope to win (as the PNAC crowd has done).
