Rice Says U.S., Allies, Blocked Nuclear Material Headed to Iran
May 31 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. and its allies in a program to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction prevented Iran from obtaining material for its nuclear weapons program within the past 9 months, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said.

``The trans-shipment of material and equipment bound for ballistic missile programs in countries of concern, including Iran'' was blocked as was the transfer of ``equipment used to produce propellant'' to a ``ballistic missile program in another region'' of the world, Rice said.

Rice disclosed the intercepts in a speech celebrating the second anniversary of the Proliferation Security Initiative, a global effort started by President George W. Bush to stop trafficking in weapons of mass destruction.

She gave no details but said that the U.S. and 10 of its partners in the initiative have cooperated on 11 successful interdiction efforts over the past nine months. Iran was the only nation interdicted that she cited by name. <snip>

13. Didn't they do this during the run-up to invade Iraq? Stopped some
ships going there with potential nuclear things on it. Turned out to be another lie. Gee, why do I think this is a lie too??

16. "....its nuclear weapons program....."?
As far as I know Iran has admitted to only peaceful nuclear power. This seems to be the same type of fear mongering that went on before the Iraq invasion. Remember 45 min. attack times, reconstituted nuclear program and mobile bio-weapons labs. Iraq having WMD was just a given to most people before the invasion and I fear this disclosure is supposed to the same to Iran. :(

"The trans-shipment of material and equipment bound for ballistic missile programs in countries of concern, including Iran'' was blocked as was the transfer of ``equipment used to produce propellant'' to a ``ballistic missile program in another region'' of the world, Rice said."

This could mean anything. It is just meant to propagate the memes that:
- Iran has an advanced nuclear WMD program including ballistic missiles.
- The world is already stopping them, so any further U.S. actions (up to and including attack) are just an extension of what the whole world is already doing.

The BFEE wants to pulverize Iran with an air strike, but I don't think they are keen on an invasion yet. The template is Iraq - up to ten or so years of sanctions and air-strikes first, then invasion. This also means they don't plan to "lose" any U.S. elections, as the plan is a long term one.
