AP: Iraq Concerned U.S. May Leave Too Soon

<snip>

"I am concerned — I am concerned," Zebari said in an interview at the United Nations late Tuesday. "I'm a realist, OK, and we've seen that before. We need to complete this mission with their help. We are getting very close. The riding is getting tougher."

But he said, "we are confident that we will make it."

<snip>

"It's not the question of numbers, of charts," he explained, referring to the U.S. military's presentations on their efforts to train Iraqis. "It's really the quality of these forces. Is there leadership? Is there performance? Is there delegation of authority?"

"Definitely, the new army, the new police, need better equipment — at least better weaponry than the insurgents or the terrorists, and we think they could provide that," Zebari said of the Americans.

2. Bush's escape clause: We could have won
but the Democrats made us pull out too soon.

That will be Bush's excuse when we lose and have to leave Iraq. Same as Viet Nam: the liberals wouldn't let us win.

after being convicted of crimes against humanity.

I'm normally against the death penalty, but in this case I can be convinced.

32. You got me thinking
Maybe to be pro-military, pro-winning-you must be a nihilist. Death is the only honorable way. I mean they manage to smear Kerry and whomever else. (He didn't have real wounds-he didn't bleed enough-he's ALIVE) Death is the only thing they respect. Everyone is dead but HEY it's a Democracy- it's a win. Being a woman, we tend to call having the kids and husband home alive and safe the victory-the rest is just a bunch of empty IDEAS.

War is just assine stupidity and it's been going on since forever. Does anybody ever learn anything from history???

The point of Vietnam was?

The point of Iraq was?

Dead silence.

34. I don't think they equate death with winning
I think they equate complete control with winning. When the Iraqis have submitted to Bush the way the submitted to Hussein, Bush will consider that a victory.

Maybe it is a form of nihilism--complete destruction of the will, or identity or individuality of the opponent.

I don't think Repubs even notice death. They don't count it, they don't try to prevent it, they don't punish for causing it. It's just a way to step over someone to get to the next person.

4. Bush may very well leave Iraq prematurely.
He'll declare victory and then on to the next attempt to turn an Islamic dictatorship into a bastion of freedom.

That's what they did in Afganistan--why wouldn't they do it in Iraq.

20. Two military reasons come to mind. . .
not enough soldiers for further adventures, and any further adventures in the ME would require bases in Iraq from which to stage the assaults. ShrubCo's screwed on both accounts -- he can't get soldiers without a draft, he can't invade another country unless he resorts to nukes.

And over all such adventures hangs the pall of a disaffected American populous. Remember, even Hitler needed public opinion to support his early efforts.

5. The primary domestic purpose of the war
...was to protect the administration from charges of illegitimacy and fraud in the electoral process. Now with the second term of the coup d'etat under his belt and the fascist corporate agenda in place, the inexorable economic costs of the war can longer be denied. The benefits of the fraudulent war in place and not to be undone for at least twenty years, it is time to disengage.

6. But, um, Rumsfeld's 10-30-30 strategy is still good, right?
Just a bit over schedule in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld wants to radically restructure the U.S. military, particularly the Army, to put even more emphasis on the speed of strategic deployment. Under the so-called "10-30-30 plan," major forces must be capable of deploying to a distant theater in 10 days, defeating an enemy within 30 days and then be ready for redeployment to a new battle somewhere else within another 30 days.

Rummy has either gone insane or is much stupider than even I thought.

I'm sure a new war every thirty days will do wonders for recruiting, which is already in the crapper.

16. OK, it is time to ask: who is "Iraq," and how do they interview her?
I'm serious now. Iraq this, Iraq that...nobody is actually talking *to* Iraq. These reporters are talking to individual people or organizations that claim to represent Iraq, but that doesn't mean that they *are* Iraq, not by a long shot. There's got to be a million different Iraqs coexisting simultaneously right now, and what "Iraq" wants is going to vary hugely depending on which "Iraq" you're talking to. If you think the provisional government is Iraq, then sure, I bet Iraq is worried that America will quit and their heads will be on pikes in the town square 48 hours later. If you think the civilians trying to live in the middle of all this shit are Iraq, I bet you get a real different answer to that question.

Semantics matter,

The Plaid Adder

Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 11:29 AM by confludemocrat
This Zebari guy is full of shit. His talk is likely news to the prime minister in Iraq, that "govt" being the fractured, cobbled together, half-baked entity it is, borne of perverse circumstances only Bush could create.

And look at this passage from the above story: "President Bush on Tuesday denied any increase of strength in the Iraqi insurgency, whose deadly attacks have been on the rise since a new government was announced April 28. He said the Iraqi government would be "plenty capable of dealing with them" with the help of American training.

I tell you all the man (Bush) is Hitler-in-the-bunker level crazy. He is on drugs. He's gotta be or he's not taking his drugs.

Fuck!

24. well he did say it himself: "Catapulting the Propaganda"
~snip~

As a longtime fan of both George Bushes' eccentric grasp of English, I naturally enjoyed this gem from W.: "See, in my line of work, you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." (Bush in Greece, N.Y., May 24, once more explaining his Social Security plan to a town hall meeting of perfectly average citizens -- except they had all been pre-screened to allow only those who agree with him into the hall.)

26. On the "we are never leaving" theme
Edited on Wed Jun-01-05 01:40 PM by TexasLawyer
This particular piece of reality is something that really catches people's attention.

I've needed to educate and inform people in order to get them politically motivated. Things that make a lot of people snap out of the Bushco spell:

We're never leaving Iraq; we're expanding the war into Iran; We're building a permanent presence in Iraq; We're slaughtering innocent Iraqis; we're being lied to; and there may be a military draft in the not-too-distant future.

I wrote all of this up into a flyer, which is available in pdf on ToppleBush.com. http://www.topplebush.com/flyers/antiwar2.pdf
I'll e-mail anyone a copy if you'd like it in Word format.

The contents are pasted here:

*************************************
We’re in TROUBLE, folks !

*************************************

· Why no Iraq exit strategy yet?
Because we’re never leaving. Long before 9/11, military control of Iraq and other oil-rich countries was placed at the top of the “neoconservative” agenda.

· The U.S. is completing 14 PERMANENT military bases in Iraq. These are major military bases, built to resemble U.S. cities: tens of thousands of wooden, air-conditioned houses, Burger Kings, gyms, and other signs of permanent U.S. occupation. Also in the works: a massive military communications system and a $1.1 billion dollar U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

· Humanitarian goals? The U.S. attack and occupation of Iraq has caused violent deaths of over 100,000 Iraqi civilians. (The Lancet, Oct. 2004). Fallujah and other cities have been flattened. Depleted uranium dust, used in U.S. armor-penetrating missiles and linked to cancer, birth defects and Gulf War Syndrome, is now spread over Iraq’s cities.

· Iran is next. The U.S. already has commandos in Iran assessing initial bombing targets. Extensive U.S. planning to provoke Iran has already taken place. (New Yorker 1/14/05). We have conducted aerial espionage and have undertaken joint military training with Israeli troops on amphibious assault. (Haaretz, 4/20/05) (Tehran is near the Caspian Sea).

· Summer of 2005. That is when the U.S. and Israel plan to attack Iran, say U.S. intelligence personnel. Many have talked off-the-record about America’s alarming intentions, hoping that a loud enough public outcry might stop the planned attack on Iran.

· No 9/11 Connection. As with Iraq, our “pre-emptive strike” on Iran will be an unprovoked war of aggression. Neither country is connected with 9/11. U.S. “intelligence” is once again being spun and altered to support war. (Daily Times (UK), 5/1/05—revealing the leaked 7/23/02 Downing Street Memo proving that Bush cooked Iraq intelligence).

· Do you feel a DRAFT? The U.S. military is seriously strained. A “special skills” draft for medical personnel is already drawn up. (Seattle P.I., 5/01/04). Forced conscription can thereafter be readily expanded to include other military-aged civilians. Selective Service is now quietly filling 10,350 draft board and 11,070 appeals board slots nationwide.

¤¤¤¤¤¤ Is this what you want for America’s future ? ¤¤¤¤¤¤
YES: Then sit there and watch it happen.
NO: Then do something about it!

Call, e-mail or write your Senators and representatives NOW:
Let them know we want our troops HOME, ALIVE, and available to fight America’s real battles. www.house.gov www.senate.gov

Tell others: U.S. corporate media feeds us stale news, trivialities (e.g., the runaway bride), and “red state” v. “blue state” screaming matches. Going unreported are the monumentally important stories that reveal the Iraq war for what it truly is—a brutal military take-over. You must become the media. Tell others what is going on; copy and distribute this flyer; write or call your news outlets when they fail to report on the many disastrous consequences of this war.

Educate yourself: Visit some of the many web-sites reporting on current U.S. foreign policy and America’s alarming march toward more unprovoked wars. Here are just a few:

33. Don't worry your pretty little heads; we'll leave in 112.5 billion barrels
of oil.

Once Syria is subdued and Saudi Arabia has simmered down a tad we might entertain leaving, but only after we've sucked the oil dry and shored up Israel's eastern flank.

Leave soon? Don't be silly.
