Recall for priest over spy claims

Warsaw: A priest accused of informing for the secret police in Poland when close to Pope John Paul II’s entourage in the 1980s has been recalled from Rome. Father Konrad Stanislaw Hejmo, 69, was the head of a centre for Polish pilgrims.

The accusations were first brought by the Institute for National Remembrance after the death of the Polish-born John Paul. They have now been fleshed out in a new report released on its website.

That says that Father Hejmo met Communist agents secretly from 1975 to 1988 in restaurants and hotels, giving them details about the Church in return for money and alcohol.

“Father Hejmo was one of the most precious sources of information for the Interior Ministry on the situation in the Vatican and in the Polish Church in the 1980s,” the report said. (AP)
