Porn sites to get their own Internet domain

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sex sites will soon be able to sign up for Web addresses in the .xxx Internet domain, but a virtual red light district won't guarantee that people can avoid pornography online, Internet experts said on Thursday.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers said late Wednesday it would move ahead with plans to set up a separate .xxx Internet domain for sexually explicit material.

Sex sites won't be required to sign up for .xxx addresses. But the new domain will enable porn sites to label themselves clearly and help filtering software keep underage users away, according to ICM Registry Inc., the company that will oversee the domain.

"This is a voluntary initiative," said Robert Corn-Revere, a Washington lawyer who helped ICM develop its proposal. "We're not trying to put it forward as the ultimate solution for everything."

8. I have my doubts that this will make much difference.

"Reputable" adult sites (by this I mean the ones that truly want to keep minors away) already have the ability to register their domain names with filter providers. These will be the ones that switch to the .xxx domain.

Other sites that deliberately try to get around filters will continue to register multiple .com domains so they can stay unfiltered.

23. Just another way for to make money...

for ICANN and other domain registrars. For example, goodvibrations.com will now also have to register goodvibrations.xxx in order to keep getting all of their customers. It wouldn't surprise me that coke and Ford buy "xxx" domains too, just to keep people from using their names in a porn site.
