At U of I, Dean steps up criticism of Bush

Iowa City, Ia. - Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean, speaking Sunday in a steamy ballroom packed with 930 college students and other supporters, stepped up his criticism of President Bush by repeatedly calling him a liar.

"This presidency has lied and covered up the exposure of a CIA agent," said Dean, former governor of Vermont. "This presidency reminds me more and more every day of the presidency of Richard Milhouse Nixon."

Dean's criticism of Bush was greeted by a roar of support and cheers. When someone in the audience shouted, "Give "em hell!" Dean responded by quoting former President Harry Truman: "I just tell the truth, and the Republicans think it's hell."

1. I was there

This was a great speech and it showed Dean is becomming sharper and sparper on policy everyday. He was much improved from just 4 months ago when I thought he was already really solid. I began thinking about the parallels to Truman before he quoted him. I even had visions of him triumphantly holding up a Rupert Murdoch newspaper with the erroneous headline "Bush defeats Dean!"

I was there this weekend and totally forgot about HD's appearance. I would have loved to have seen it.

(BTW, in keeping with my moderator impartiality, I must state that I am neither a Dean supporter nor a Dean detractor.)

5. Yup, I was there too

I was there too and this was one of the best times I've ever seen Howard. You could feel the energy in the crowd... I also marched in the Homecoming Parade with the Dean float and the Johnson County Democrats... that was great.
