U.S. troops seized the Jordanian militant's driver, an aide and his laptop computer -- which included personal photos saved under "My Pictures" -- at a roadblock near Ramadi nearly three months ago and believed they were closing in on Zarqawi.

"I can say categorically that I am not aware of anybody having a definite sighting of Zarqawi at any particular place at any particular time," the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told a group of reporters at a briefing in Baghdad.

"I can't tell you that we saw him on March 27, or that we saw him in Ramadi hospital...

"There are a lot of Zarqawi sightings going on and it's a case of which one do you roll to and why is it that that tip is more valuable than the last one," he said, suggesting that many tips on Zarqawi's whereabouts prove to be non-starters.

Last night, the CBS Evening News led off with a bizarre non-story about how the "suicide bombers" may have reached a peak. Their eveidence for this? A US official says so. The US official's evidence? Well, there was none. NONE. That qualified as a leading news story on a major US network. No news but the speculations of a US official, presented without any evidence at all. It was one of the most disgraceful displays I've ever seen on a network, and that's saying A LOT. The focus then turned to the CBS Pentagon stenographer, who was asked by the anchor to relay the Pentagon's current feelings about the insurgency. After a good bit of MORE official speculation, the anchor asked "So will this hurt or help Zarqawi?" as if Zarqawi was synonomous with "the insurgency!" Lazy and incompetent journalism at best. At worst, well...you know.
