Judge Says Saddam's Morale Collapsing

By SAMEER N. YACOUB
Associated Press Writer
Published June 4, 2005, 7:57 AM CDT

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Saddam Hussein's morale has plummeted as the gravity of the war crimes charges he faces sinks in, according to the judge trying him. U.S. and Iraqi forces arrested an Iraqi regarded as a top terror leader in northern Iraq.

Iraqi and U.S. soldiers also kept up their pressure against suspected insurgents south of Baghdad, with more than 800 troops, mainly Iraqis, cordoning off districts in Latifiyah, a city in an especially violent region dubbed the Triangle of Death.

The U.S. military believes insurgents behind almost daily deadly attacks in Baghdad use districts on its southern edge as staging areas.

"For two years I have been suffering from these terrorists, now it is my time," Brig. Gen. Mohammed Essa Baher, an Iraqi army commander from the region whose two sons had been killed by insurgents, said on the eve of Saturday's offensive.

4. Saddam could suffer for a thousand years and it wouldn't be enough.
And I wish him company with the stupidest letter in the alphabet.

10. Saddam is on "trial" as a result of our illegal invasion and occupation...
...of Iraq. Do you think the destruction of entire country and as well as all of the dead, wounded, and permanently crippled on all sides was really worth having Saddam stand trial?

And just where are all of the Iraqis and Kurds buried that Saddam allegedly had killed over the years? Are they buried with the nonexistent Iraqi WMDs?

15. MLD, I think the Saddam trial is a farce of the greatest dimensions.
I also think the "mass graves" is highly exaggerated.

That being said, he did commit heinous crimes by running a brutal regime in his country, he allowed his sons, especially Qusay (sp?) to commit heinous crimes. No one held a gun to Saddam's head and forced him to commit those atrocious acts. He was a very willing and able pawn for the U.S. government. I have no pity for him whatsover.

I do believe our sanctions are responsible for the slow, tortuous deaths of thousands of Iraqis, especially children, by our use of depleted uranium and gawd-knows-what-else.

BTW, the "letter" I'm referring to in my prior post is the letter "W."

5. I'd say such public comments by a purported "judge" should disqualify ...
... him/her from trying the case. I'd expect such "commentary" from Faux Nuze, not a fair and impartial "judge."

11. My thoughts exactly.
This only verifies my belief that the trial will be a farce.

6. Well, having Saddam's morale lowered makes the illegal war in Iraq....
...and all of those deaths, American, British, and Iraqi, completely justified.

Massive sarcasm off.

8. Well, he'll have to stand in line.
Among others, he'll have to stand in line behind the American troops in Iraq whose morale has been collapsing as they are deployed longer and longer.

12. This is Bush's latest war aim
Collapsing Saddam's morale. Everyone must do their part in this important psychological struggle between Bush and Saddam, even if it...kills them.

14. Saddam is depressed, says his trial judge

By Raymond Whitaker
05 June 2005

Saddam Hussein's morale has "collapsed" after nearly 18 months in jail awaiting trial, according to the man who will sit in judgment on him.

Iraq's former dictator has been held in an American-run detention centre since US forces plucked him from an underground hideout in his home district near Tikrit in December 2003. Newspapers recently published photographs of Saddam in his underpants, bringing complaints that his rights as a prisoner awaiting trial were being violated.

Raid Juhi, who will preside over his trial, told the London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq al-Awsat: "The ousted president has suffered a collapse in his morale, because he understands the extent of the charges against him, and because he's certain that he will stand trial before an impartial court." Charges include killing rival politicians during his 30-year rule, using chemical weapons against Kurdish civilians, invading Kuwait and suppressing Kurdish and Shia uprisings in 1991.

19. Judicial Oxymoron
"The ousted president has suffered a collapse in his morale, because he understands the extent of the charges against him, and because he's certain that he will stand trial before an impartial court."

Translation: Saddam is sad because he knows that I've already found him guilty.

18. It's finally hit home to him that it isn't really about him.
It's just the oil. That would be depressing to realize for any megalomaniac who thinks everything is about him.

That or "Saddam is so sorry, we decided we don't need to try him after all. As a matter of fact, here take your country back and get it under control for God's sake. Just don't nationalize the oil industry again."
